art,art history,design09-09-2011Visiting Designer Lecture - Manual Miranda, Designer for 2x4
- Tuesday, 24 November 2009, 3pm - room 236, Art Building
- "2x4 is a collaborative group of creative directors, writers, and designers founded in 1994 by partners Michael Rock, Susan Sellers, and Georgianna Stout. With cutting-edge projects in virtually all graphic media-print, web, motion graphics, and environmental design, 2x4's trademark approach heavily emphasizes critical thinking and research. Known for intellectual content and explorations of rhetorical meaning, many of 2x4's projects question the nature of design and are as much about the thinking process behind each work as the finished product. This ideology, based on an almost algorithmic approach, is the foundation for 2x4's pioneering model for design, one that makes process the product."

- The work of 2x4 was been featured in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and he Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2006 2x4 was awarded the National Design Award for Communications. Additionally, 2x4 has been featured in numerous publications including Time Magazine, Eye and Idea Magazine and is one of the design studios featured in the Apple Profiles.

art,design,happening now12-05-2009Exhibit - Open to Question
- Fall 2009 - Allen Library
- The exhibit, which was originally sponsored by the University District Museum Without Walls, a project of the University District Arts & Heritage Committee, was created by UW design students and as of Sept. 5 became the property of the UW Office of Regional Affairs. Open to Question won an Award of Excellence from the University and College Designers Association, which honors the best works created either for or by educational institutions.
- The exhibit consists mainly of photographs from the 1960s and 70s, along with some ephemera, such as posters, flyers and covers from an underground newspaper of the time, the Helix. The materials were compiled by Julia Swan, public relations coordinator at the Burke Museum, as part of her thesis project for the Museology Program. The student designers who created the exhibit were supervised by Assistant Professor of Art Kristine Matthews.
