The Design Entrance Workshop takes place once a year and there are no makeup dates.
The 2010 Entrance Workshop will be June 15, 2010. All students taking the Design Entrance Workshop should come to Mary Gates Hall Room 389 at 8:00am. The workshop will last until approximately 5:00pm. Snacks will be provided throughout the day. There will be a break for lunch (on your own).
There is a $20 fee for supplies and expenses related to the exam. You may bring a check (payable to University of Washington) or cash to the Advising office (open Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm). You may also pay at the exam. No credit cards will be accepted.
To be eligible for the workshop, you must be a current UW student, or an eligible transfer student who has already applied for admission to the UW for Autumn 2010.
If you have taken ART 166 and received a grade of 2.8-3.6, we strongly encourage you to take the Design Entrance Workshop. Students who receive a 3.7 or higher in ART 166 are automatically accepted in the Design program.
All participants must register for the Workshop by May 28, 2010. Please use the online registration form here to sign up for the Workshop.

Note: Art 166 projects can be submitted in their original format. If you revise any projects after the course has ended (after receiving your final grade), please submit originals as well as the revised work. Please clearly label the new projects "Revised".
All samples should support your application to the Design major. These may include photography, drawing, design projects and/or other studio coursework. Portfolios will be available for student pick-up outside of room 247 of the Art Building on (date tba). All unclaimed portfolios will be discarded after (date tba).
This personal statement should address your background and reasons for interest in the Visual Communication Design major. We are especially interested in how you see the UW design program relative to other programs and your interests/career goals. Please limit this statement to one 8.5 x 11" page.

Design faculty will present an overview/orientation to all design majors. Following the orientation, students will be divided into smaller groups to complete a series of short design problems. There will be a breaks for lunch (on your own) as well as snack breaks (snacks provided). During the problem sessions, faculty will be available to answer questions and provide guidance.
Students will be notified by email of their status on Tuesday June 22 2010. Accepted students should contact the Art Advising Office before Tuesday June 29 to register for the Fall 2010 sophomore design classes.
Students may pick up their portfolios from the Art Advising Office (ART 104) between Tuesday June 22 and Friday July 9th. The Art Advising Office is open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. Any unclaimed portfolios will be discarded beginning Monday July 12 2010.
