All sophomore design students are required to have a laptop that they can use in studio classes by the start of Fall Quarter 2009.
We prefer the 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo. An alternate Apple or PC model is acceptable, but the laptop must have wireless capability and be capable of running the latest Adobe Creative Suite (CS3 or CS4) software.
For students interested in Industrial Design, the laptop should be capable of running Rhino (a 3-d modelling program). The recommended MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo is capable of running Windows software and the Windows version of Rhino.
To facilitate the design laptop requirement, the School of Art has partnered with Apple Computer and the UW Bookstore to offer a discounted laptop with extended warranty. For details on the latest promotion, please contact Mark Rector at mrector@u.washington.edu.
The required Adobe CS3/CS4 Design Premium Suite software may be purchased at academic discount from the UW bookstore for $299.95 (regular price $1,799).
Additionally, students are required to purchase the Adobe Font Collection for Design Education. This font collection can be purchased at the UW Bookstore for $149 (also eligible for the U book store customer rebate).
For other software titles, please see the entire UW academic software price list, which can be downloaded here.
