Postbac Studies in FIBERS

Postbaccalaureate is a matriculated status reserved for students who are working toward a second bachelor's degree, or preparing for entrance to graduate or professional school. Only a small number of applicants are admitted as postbaccalaureate students, because the University's primary commitment is to undergraduates completing a first bachelor degree. In keeping with university policy, the School of Art recommends admission of a very limited number of postbaccalaureates each year.

Admission to the Fibers program as a postbaccalaureate is extremely competitive. Applicants may be admitted for Autumn, Winter, or Spring quarter, have generally had some course work in the field of Fibers, and are seeking a BFA. Acceptance is based on a portfolio review of the applicant's work, transcripts from the first undergraduate degree, and a School of Art Supplementary Information Form outlining reasons for seeking instruction in Fibers at the University of Washington. Students accepted as postbacs are expected to take classes as they pertain to the Fibers curriculum and must enroll in classes as determined by the Fibers faculty. In general, fibers postbacs take a minimum of 2-3 years to complete a degree.

  • Obtain an undergraduate application from the University of Washington Office of Admissions. Complete all required documentation and return to the Office of Admissions by their appointed deadlines. (NOTE: Submitting your application to Admissions earlier than their deadline is advantageous.) Be sure that you indicate your interest in Fibers on the application.
  • Advisers in the Office of Admissions will review and process your application and forward it to the Academic Advising and Students Services Office in the School of Art. At this time, the School will send you a School of Art Supplementary Information Form that must be completed and returned with your portfolio within 14 days of receipt. Portfolios should be no more than 24 slides of your strongest work in fibers and other areas of art.
  • The Fibers faculty will review your application/portfolio and return their recommendation to the University of Washington Office of Admissions. This office will review all recommendations and notify applicants of their status.

We recommend that you speak with an adviser and/or member of the Fibers faculty prior to applying to the University.
