METALS
The University of Washington Metals Program promotes artistic growth through an effective combination of traditional bench skills and advanced technology, all within a framework of historical body-adornment and the contemporary metals field.
The University of Washington was cited as the 20th best University in the world by Jiao Tong University, Shanghi, in its 2005 survey. In keeping with the research mission of the University and with the metalsmithing field’s traditional love of tools and technology, the UW Metals Program offers both graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to become involved in unique, exciting and innovative collaborative research projects with individual researchers or larger groups across campus or the wider community. Art students bring their sense of design, refined hand skills, familiarity with direct manipulation of various materials and creative problem solving abilities to work with the expertise of individuals in other fields, thus experiencing learning in a cross disciplinary environment of applied design and today’s real world needs. The research methods learned become a firm foundation upon which rigorous individual artistic inquiry can then be developed.
BA students are welcomed into the 200 and 300 level Metals courses. Along with Metals BFA and MFA students, they have also been valuable contributors to some of our research teams, bringing their own unique set of experiences and skills.
