Copyright is a complicated subject, even when applied to the use of images for educational purposes. All four fair use factors need to be considered when contemplating the use of an image. A helpful tool in this consideration is the Fair Use Checklist.

It also is helpful to know whether or not a work has passed into the public domain. Two charts, one created by Lolly Gassaway and one created by Peter Hirtle, are available on the web.
