Bachelor of Design Program Selection

Operations and teaching are online. Current and prospective students: please visit our COVID-19 Updates pages. Faculty and staff are available via email.

At the end of their first year as Bachelor of Design students, all sophomores are selected into the specific design majors — Visual Communication Design, Industrial Design, or Interaction Design — based on faculty review of their interests and demonstrated abilities.

Design faculty distribute the major selection form in the fifth week of spring quarter. Students must fill in and return the form in ten days with their UW transcript attached (unofficial transcripts are okay).

Faculty meet after spring quarter grades are in and select students for each major based on their performance in all six of the sophomore studios. Every attempt is made to match students with their first choice, but some students may receive their second or third choice. Over the past ten years, 95–100% of students have received their first choice of major; a small number received their second choice.

The School's Advising Office will notify students of their assigned major via email in late June.

Please note that all major assignments are final. The Division of Design does not allow students to shift between majors in the junior and senior years.
