Andrew Allen

Alaskan-raised designer working in creativity and everyday tools. Founder of FiftyThree and designer of the popular drawing app, Paper (50+ million downloads), later acquired by WeTransfer where I led as the Head of Product & Design. Founder of Short of the Week, the premiere online community for emerging filmmakers. Currently, I am the CEO & founder of Andy Works building products that infuse everyday experiences with play. I also teach foundational design at the UW and make furniture.
Romson Bustillo
Interdisciplinary Visual Art, Instagram (he/him/his)
I am based in Seattle, and my work integrates prints, mixed media, installations, and interventions — be they performances, readings, prompts, or site specific experiences and/or workshops. I’m excited to share my journey and my approach to art making with students and the IVA community. I am a 2019 Artist Trust Fellow. Currently, I’m exhibiting an immersive installation at the Bellevue Arts Museum and mixed media works at the Gates Discovery Center.
Fiona Connor

Born in New Zealand, I am an artist based in Los Angeles. Vital, recurring concerns in my practice include the social and psychological life of the object, the politics of camouflage and mimesis, and the ethics and aesthetics of the built environment. I have made solo exhibitions at Secession, Vienna; SculptureCenter, New York; MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles; Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth; Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne; among others. I have been involved with various artist-run spaces, including the Laurel Doody Library Supply, a distribution project that places small run artist books in libraries located in the United States, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, and France. I received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BA/BFA from the University of Auckland. I am really excited to be connecting with the seniors in Photo/Media this quarter and to be working with the amazing faculty and team at the School.
Granite Calimpong
3D4M: ceramics + glass + sculpture, website (he/him/his)
I moved to Seattle in 2007 to become involved in the thriving glass community that exists here. I worked as an artist assistant, a fabricator, and maintained my own studio between 2007 and 2017. I came to UW in 2017 to pursue an MFA and completed the program in 2019 (3D4M). I am currently participating in a long-term residency at Pottery Northwest in Seattle Center that will run through early 2022. I look forward to reconnecting with the School community and with the place that I became so familiar with during my graduate studies.
Alex Chang

After 4+ years of working both as a senior designer and a design manager at Amazon across a number of teams (such as FireTV, Automotive, and Retail Consumables teams), I joined Google as a staff designer in late summer of 2020 and am currently focusing on system and strategic design for the Google Cloud Platform. This will be the third year that I have had the privilege of teaching the interface design course. The most rewarding part about teaching this course is seeing our students become thoughtful designers in crafting meaningful and useful interface design and observing how much progress they make from day one of the class to their final project presentation. It is also heartening to learn that many of their class projects eventually lead them to their first design jobs after graduation.

I've lived in the Pacific Northwest since 2007. Making works in a range of media, some projects include a room-sized crystal radio, a spacesuit indicator badge, an observatory tower in Vermont, and a publication currently available through the Lux Aeterna exhibition at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.
Rafael Soldi

I am a Peruvian-born, Seattle-based artist and curator. My practice centers on how queerness and masculinity intersect with larger topics of our time such as immigration, memory, and loss. My work has been collected and exhibited internationally at museums and galleries. I have received numerous grants and awards from the Magenta Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Artist Trust, 4Culture, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, and Center Santa Fe. I have attended residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, PICTURE BERLIN, and the Bogliasco Foundation.
My first monograph, Imagined Futures (Candor Arts), was published in 2020. My work has been reviewed on ARTFORUM, The Seattle Times, The Boston Globe, Photograph Magazine, The Seen, Art Nexus, and PDN. I am the co-founder of the Strange Fire Collective, a project dedicated to highlighting work made by women, people of color, and queer and trans artists.
Steven Watson

I am a creative director and co-founder at Turnstyle. My experience includes branding and identity, print, packaging, and web design. Although my capabilities and experience extend to a wide array of design offerings, identity is at the core of what interests me. I love the challenge of crafting visual systems that capture a client’s unique brand persona. Whether designing from the ground up, managing visual identity transitions, or building upon an established identity, I love the challenge of balancing the use of iconic, enduring brand elements with the flexibility to evolve, surprise, and delight. In addition to my work at Turnstyle, I have been a guest speaker, presenter, and panel member at various design events, conferences, and workshops in the U.S. and Mexico. I previously served for two years on the board of AIGA Seattle and was a juror for the Communication Arts 56th Design Annual.
This will be my fourth year teaching corporate identity design at UW. I always enjoy helping students to apply their burgeoning design skills in a systematic context. In return, they inspire me and help me sharpen my own craft and thinking.
