Engaging in an ongoing dialogue with my subconscious, my paintings serve as a chronicle of personal mythologies, reflecting my skepticism of reality, dreams, and distorted memories. Through this internal exploration, I address themes of ambivalence, femininity, intimacy, trauma, and memory. For me, painting is a mechanism for unraveling both the complexities of my own identity and the intricacies of the world around me.
My work frequently depicts solitary figures in ethereal, foreboding natural environments that blur the boundaries between comfort and discomfort, reality and perception. Using oil paint and narrative imagery, I explore these self-fashioned mythologies, employing bold colors and dream-like, unsettling compositions. The process reveals a duality: while storytelling unveils my personal fears, desires, and experiences, the act of creation provides a therapeutic space for untangling ambivalent emotions. My creative process is guided by intuition, beginning with a compulsion to create and allowing the work to evolve without a predetermined outcome, sensing an unknown message waiting to emerge.
In my approach, I allow my visual language to develop organically, creating a space for uncertainty that invites viewers to insert their own interpretations and personal narratives. As I use painting for self-reflection and discovery, I aim to offer viewers an opportunity for internal contemplation, where they can connect to the work on their terms. My goal is to continually delve deeper into my experiences and perceptions of reality, unraveling the threads of my existence through each painting. My practice is led by intuition and self-investigation, embracing the notion that understanding follows creation.
The pursuit of an MFA stems from my desire for a stimulating and supportive creative environment that encourages experimentation and growth. At this stage in my artistic journey, I am driven by a need for critical discourse, collaboration, and mentorship. I believe that engaging in a vibrant community of artists will push me to challenge my existing visual language and deconstruct recurring themes, helping me break new ground conceptually and technically. Throughout the MFA program, I aspire to deepen my understanding of the complex relationships between the figure, personal narrative, and natural environments that permeate my work. I aim to further explore how these relationships evolve through painting, refining my ability to communicate complex emotional landscapes visually. This exploration will allow me to expand my conceptual boundaries and technical skills, opening up new possibilities in my practice. As a graduate student, my goals are to engage fully in a creative environment that fosters risk-taking and personal growth. I seek opportunities for research and experimentation, with a focus on pushing the boundaries of traditional painting. Ultimately, my aspiration is to emerge from the program as an artist who is critically engaged with the world and equipped to contribute meaningfully to contemporary art discourse.
