This Exploration Seminar was last offered in August/September 2016. We do not currently have a date for the next time it will be offered.
The Design Program in Rome combines the study of art, art history, history, photography, and current design practice within a condensed five-week framework and makes maximum use of original works of art & architecture, historical sites, as well as contemporary design studios, museums and factories.
Studio sessions + critiques supplement group visits to sites within the city, day excursions to the areas surrounding Rome, and an overnight five-day field trip to northern Italy.
Students present one research project of a key site to the group, contribute to the on-line documentation of the course, design a book based on their personal experiences and observations of the culture, learn all aspects of digital photography, and finally participate in a public photography exhibition upon return.
Because the program requires some knowledge of Italian culture, and Roman art and history, participants prepare for the course in 1.5 hour weekly sessions held during Spring quarter prior to departure.
As noted above, site specific visits and presentations prove invaluable as compared to traditional methods of research and study. Art, architecture, and design experienced in a historical, geographical, and cultural context, allows students to connect with their studies back in America. This type of first-hand experience makes learning far more interesting, enjoyable, and memorable.
Additionally, exposing students to an entirely different culture where there is a greater appreciation to history, craft, design, architecture and life in general is an extremely important experience that ties in nicely with the basic principles and philosophy of our curriculum within the Division of Design.

Students will be housed in private apartments within walking distance of the UW Rome Center.
Academics
Students will earn a total of five credits for successfully completing this program.

Program Expenses
Estimated Program Fee: $5,700
This does not include the UW Study Abroad Fee ($300), airfare, most food, UW Study Abroad Insurance (~$40/month), other health expenses such as immunizations and personal spending money.
Application Process
This program is only open to UW Design majors. The application includes a personal statement, three short answer questions, faculty recommendations (in the form of a short survey) and electronic signature documents related to University of Washington policies and expectations for study abroad. Following the online application process, students are contacted by their Program Director for an in-person interview. Once an admission decision has been made regarding your application, you will be notified by the study abroad system via email.
