Two Division of Art alumnae — Joan Hornig (MFA 1985) and Amy Johnson (MFA 2007) — were selected in May 2014 for Alaskan artist awards from this Anchorage-based foundation.
Hornig, who has lived just outside Fairbanks since 1999, is a painter who has started doing ceramic work. She received a $7,500 project award to purchase a kiln and clay supply, which will allow her to create sculptures at her home studio.
Johnson lives in Anchorage and was selected as one of ten Fellows for this year. That $18,000 award will support her creation of a short film with collaborators in Berlin, Seattle, and elsewhere. The press release says, “Her art film will use the Alaska landscape as a metaphor to reflect the interior of our lives and will be representative of contemporary conceptual work from the state.” More about her work may be seen on her website.
