Biography
Lucy/ Lion is a trans artist who creates what she calls broken doll art. Broken doll art consists of three main concepts. First is the fetishization of queer people, aka dolls (a commonly used term for trans women), who are at a far greater risk of facing sexual violence and harassment despite being called monsters and ugly by the perpetrators of such violence. She demonstrates this is her art by turning herself into a delicate monster doll.
Methods she uses are practical effects such as SFX makeup and set design, wardrobe typically gothic-inspired, ranging anywhere from vampire to witch, and traditional photography methods such as lighting, staging, camera obscura, etc. She uses these methods to showcase how people view us as monsters while also highlighting gender identity and self-expression. Secondly is the prevalence of bullying that queer, neurodivergent, and alternative youths face from parents and peers, which can lead to a loss of childhood and an increased suicide rate. She showcases these concepts with the use of childhood items such as stuffed animals and toys that are commonly enjoyed by adults who were mistreated as children in my art by altering them into cute little monsters using sewing and other modification methods.
Thirdly, it is common that sexual assault victims are described as broken by themselves and others. Dehumanization faced by sexual assault victims can make them feel like they don’t have a purpose, as if others see them as objects rather than living, breathing human beings. She takes this idea by giving items that people often discard or look at as useless, such as animal bones and toys from places such as the Goodwill bins, a new purpose. Her goal is to inspire and comfort underprivileged people, as she believes in finding beauty in trauma, taking inspiration from the idea of kintsugi.
