Maryam Dehbozorgi is an Iranian-born artist hailing from the enchanting city of Shiraz. Her artistic journey began in 2011 when she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, followed by a Master's degree in Painting from the University of Sura Tehran in 2023. Her educational background laid the foundation for her career in the realms of graphic design and visual arts.
In 2014, Maryam embarked on her professional career in the field of art by serendipitously joining an art class led by the renowned artist and art director, Mohsen Zare, who is based in Shiraz. Her passion for images and films greatly influenced her artistic endeavors. Her love for flipping through photo albums and watching home videos started as a form of entertainment but gradually evolved into a tool for self-exploration and curiosity, not only for herself but for others as well, starting from her childhood..
Her initial works primarily involved collages of family photographs, internet images, and magazine clippings, delving into diverse themes such as migration, technological advancement, and identity. Eventually, her focus shifted to the concept of "self" and the challenges she encountered in her daily life. Using photographs as authentic documents, she connected with her own past, which had become lost and faded over time. Her photographs would be scorched, torn, combined with other materials, sometimes painted over, or captured in video art. Many of her subjects revolved around self-portraits and the city in which she lived.
Maryam draws inspiration from her personal life and the concept of "self," intertwining it with broader societal issues to create a vast array of artworks. To achieve this, she incorporates familiar everyday objects into her compositions, blending them with photographs. Currently, utopian thinking and exploration in the realm of cybernetics have become a significant focus of her artistic contemplation.
Her artwork has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, spanning the domains of graphic design and visual art, both in Iran and internationally. Additionally, she held her debut solo exhibition in 2020, showcasing a collection of photos entitled "Flight Between Walls" at the Hamres Gallery.
Maryam Dehbozorgi's art is a captivating journey through her personal life and the profound challenges she has faced, translated into a rich tapestry of images, where the mundane merges with the extraordinary to create thought-provoking and visually stunning works of art. Her work continues to evolve, reflecting her dedication to exploring new horizons in the world of visual expression.
