Romson Regarde Bustillo

Interdisciplinary Visual Art, Instagram (he/him/siya/sila)

I am a Seattle based artist originally from the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. My art is organic, experiential, research based, and purposed. My work is interdisciplinary rooted in printmaking, mixed media, and space coding. Decades of developing new techniques to produce monumental collagraph and mixed media works; layered installations, writings, and collaborations have led to discoveries and distinct approaches. The culmination is transdisciplinary and immersive with the intention of having multiple entry points for making and mutuality. I benefit from a line of ancestors — known and unknown, gifted teachers, and colleagues. Teaching and learning means both continuity and change for me. I am looking forward to sharing this with students in the IVA program.

I moved to Seattle in 2007 to become involved in the thriving glass community that exists here. I worked as an artist assistant, a fabricator, and maintained my own studio between 2007 and 2017. I came to UW in 2017 to pursue an MFA and completed the program in 2019 (3D4M). I recently participated in a long-term residency at Pottery Northwest in Seattle Center that ran through early 2022. I look forward to reconnecting with the School community and with the place that I became so familiar with during my graduate studies.

Melanie Enderle

Art History (she/her/hers)

I am an art historian who has been associated with the UW since 2003. I also teach regularly at Seattle Pacific University as well as several area colleges, and I have been an educator at Seattle Art Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art. I received an MA in British art and literature from Reading University in England and my art history PhD at the University of Washington.

My research is socio-cultural driven with interests in modern European and American images of public spaces, gendered behavior, and representations of women. Recent publications include “The Reflective Eye of Walter Sickert: Mirroring Male Victorian Dominance in the Era of the New Woman,” “The Empowered Ingénue: Women Stepping Out as Solo Performers Onstage,” and “Windows on the Soul: Portraits by Major American Artists."

I am owner of and creative director at September Works. Prior to that, I worked at Blink, Tectonic, and Microsoft. I received bachelor's degrees in design and Japanese from the University of Washington.

Lawrence Hamlin

Interdisciplinary Visual Art, website (he/him/his)

My background is a mixed bag of working professionally as a Master Printer for Crown Point Press in San Francisco, for Pyramid Atlantic in Riverdale Maryland, and for myself under the studio titled Mad Dog Press. While at Crown Point Press working as a Printer I was fortunate to have worked with Wayne Thiebaud, Judy Pfaff, Sol Lewitt, Robert Bectle, and numerous other painters and sculptors who came to make prints. I was at Crown Point when the summer workshops first started, and I loved the teaching aspect of bringing Artists into a professional shop to make work.

I have taught at several institutions. At Parkland Community College and the University of Illinois I taught drawing I and II, Design I and II, as well as introductory drawing and design for Architects. I believe in the power of student accomplishments when given a challenge, and a chance to own their own educational work.

I continue to make prints and drawings. I am currently setting up a studio here in Seattle, and look forward to meeting the community of artist and educators at UW.

David Hull

Industrial Design, website (he/him/his)

I am an industrial designer by trade, a strategist and artist by practice. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Industrial Design from Western Washington University and a Masters of Fine Arts in Designed Objects from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). After graduating from SAIC, I was an instructor for 3D modeling: Solidworks in their designed objects department. My background experience is diverse, and throughout my career I have picked up many ways of working, as in-house designer, consultant, artist and teacher. Some of my passions include human-centered design, design for manufacture, user experience design, prototyping, and sketching. When I’m not working you can find me in off the grid in the cascades, for a hike or snowshoe – depending on the season.

E.E. Ikeler

Painting + Drawing, website (she/her and they/them)

In my work I use a diverse range of materials to build meaning with text, grids, and abstraction. I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona; received a BFA from Cooper Union in 2008 and an MFA from Yale School of Art in 2016. Before coming to UW I have taught painting and drawing at Indiana University, College of Wooster, and Ox-Bow School of Art. I’m visiting Seattle from Brooklyn, NY, and look forward to meeting my students and exploring the Pacific Northwest!

Adam Jossem

Industrial Design, website (he/him/his)

I am an alumnus of the UW Industrial Design program and have been designing consumer products for the past 20 years. I spent most of my career designing kitchen gadgets and housewares and recently worked at a startup designing consumer electronics. In the last two years, I have started my own design company, consulting with clients in need of design experience and designing my own products. I have always enjoyed sharing skills, techniques, and my design philosophy, and I look forward to offering my experience for the ID students to learn from this year.

Leisha Muraki

Visual Communication Design, website (she/her/hers)

Since 2009 I have worked remotely and abroad on three different continents, empowering communities, launching ideas, and contributing to the fields of art, film, music, technology, education, health, and design. My responsibilities have moved beyond the normalities of a full-time job. It demands deep understanding and agility across multiple avenues: collaborator, communicator, designer, director, lecturer, mentor, researcher, strategist, and writer. Currently, I serve as the founder and managing director of RORA, a venture design practice, and as a brand strategy consultant for Australian-based agency MDMD. In both capacities, I partner with socially-minded leaders to help (re)launch their organizations by applying design methodologies that accelerate business development and advance impact.

My interest in teaching stems from my own experience, where professors created a safe environment to explore, discover and collaborate. I hope to co-create a space with students that affirm themselves as creative thinkers and worthy contributors to the challenges and opportunities around them.

Amanda Salov

3D4M: ceramics + glass + sculpture, website, Instagram (she/her/hers)

I grew up outside the rural pottery town of Cambridge, Wisconsin. My artwork often consists of many small delicate cells that make up a larger whole. Recently, I have been working with color gradients within repetitive forms, sharing that some things are constant while other things change. I look to our natural environments - like the constants of the sea, the mountains, the sky, and the ever-changing atmosphere - to serve as metaphors. I am looking forward to teaching Art 353 this term, where we will explore building forms with color through careful additions of pigments to porcelain paperclay.

Vassilissa Semouchkina

Interaction Design, LinkedIn (she/her/hers or they/them/theirs)

I am a multidisciplinary designer and scientific communication specialist, with a background in visual communication design, design research, and architecture. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) and a Bachelor of Art (Art and Design). After working as the senior designer for Michigan Technological University, I attended the University of Washington to pursue a Master of Design. Since graduating, I have taught as a guest lecturer for the University of Washington School of Art + Art History + Design, the Global Innovation Exchange Program, and the Human-Computer Interaction and Design Program. In my free time, you can find me hiking, foraging, skiing, and climbing.

Tarran Sklenar

Painting + Drawing, website (she/her/hers)

Originally from rural Iowa, I moved to Seattle in 2015 where I now reside and work as an artist and educator. My paintings are centered on personal narratives that have influenced my interest in crime and art history as it relates to our current contemporary discourse while challenging the pleasure of the gaze and historical representations of the female figure. My current body of work incorporates elements of romanticized American landscape with grotesque figural elements to question the myth of women as one with nature, the idea of land being available for conquest, and Man’s acts of violence against the land historically and contemporarily.

I hold an MFA in Painting + Drawing from the University of Washington.

Scott Tsukamaki

Industrial Design, website (he/him/his)

Hi everyone! I’m Scott, and I am an industrial and user experience designer at Fluke Corp. I’ve developed a wide variety of products ranging from dog toys to professional tools while at various businesses, start-ups, and corporations. This year has been exciting as the enterprise smart-watch I designed for Mason and the Fluke 1777 Series power quality meter launched.

I’m excited for this coming spring quarter as it’s my first time teaching an ID studio class. It will be exciting to see what the designers come up with!

Ryan Weatherly

Painting + Drawing (he/him/his)

I have been working as an artist and art educator in Seattle since graduating from the University of Washington in 2013. My teaching goals are to share with students my knowledge of painting as well as facilitate an environment of openness and individual expression. My creative work is an exploration of figurative representation and gestural abstraction. The work is experimental and deals with human subjectivity, visually appearing as a multiplicity of fragmented physical and emotional states. I am inspired by images drawn from personal histories, historical archives, and film stills.
