Awards for painters to honor the legacy of Alden Mason

Submitted on December 20, 2023 - 12:33pm

Established in 2017, the Alden Mason Foundation was formed to sustain and celebrate Alden Mason’s (BFA 1945, MFA 1947) extraordinary legacy as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most prominent artists and to acknowledge his influence on multiple generations of students as an influential professor of art at the University of Washington (1949-1981).

Throughout his career, Mason was a generous teacher, mentor and supporter of younger artists whose work he felt deserved respect and recognition. This year, the Foundation announced the inaugural Alden Mason Foundation Award and the Alden Mason Graduate Fellowship to pay homage to the enduring artistic legacy of Mason.

Alden Mason Foundation Award

The inaugural Alden Mason Foundation Award will provide $12,000 to a Washington painter of exceptional merit. In addition to the monetary award of $12,000, the Foundation will also honor two eligible applicants with a Special Recognition Award of $1,000 each.

Applications for the 2024 Alden Mason Foundation Award are now open, the deadline is January 31, 2024.  For more information and how to apply, visit the Alden Mason Foundation website.

Alden Mason Endowed Graduate Fellowship

The Alden Mason Endowed Graduate Fellowship will recognize outstanding MFA candidates in Painting + Drawing at the University of Washington School of Art + Art History + Design. We are excited to announce that the first round of awards will be made to three second year graduates in Winter 2024. Each graduate will receive funds to help realize their thesis exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery and the Sand Point Gallery in Spring 2024.

On behalf of the School of Art + Art History + Design, we thank the Alden Mason Foundation for their commitment to emerging artists, their generous support to the School, and the opportunity to honor the legacy of Alden Mason.
