Biography

“Grace fills empty spaces, but it can only enter where there is a void to receive it” Simone Weil, Gravity and Grace

Cameron is a painter, researcher, and conceptual artist interested in reinterpreting traditions of mysticism within contemporary experience. Utilizing material interventions and laborious physical processes as a stand-in for body-mediated devotional practices, Cameron seeks out the “magnitude of experience” approached by early mystics like Julian of Norwich, and more recent figures like Anne Carson. By pushing material, representation, and construction to the point of failure, the resulting art-objects act as evidence of an intense striving for embodied liberation within repressive systems of power.

Cameron’s studio practice is grounded heavily in discussions of theology and critical theory. Their conceptual research concentrates on post-structuralist understandings of immanence/transcendence, end-stage capitalism, and liberatory struggle. Maintaining a parallel curatorial practice, they have curated and juried interdisciplinary exhibitions exploring anonymity, americana, and contemporary mythos.
