Program Overview
In their junior year, art majors become eligible to apply for the honors program. The BA in Art Departmental Honors program provides students the opportunity to complete an advanced degree with a set of experiences that encourage diverse collaborations, innovation, and work across programmatic boundaries. This peer group of students set the standard for excellence in the school and amplify the importance of community amongst dedicated creatives on campus.
Students in this program will be eligible for and have access to:
- Scholarships available in the School and through the University Honors program.
- Support in applying for local, national and international awards and distinctions.
- Access to a dedicated honors studio space in their final year.
- Strong faculty mentorship toward continued study at the graduate level and professional advice.
Degree Requirements
In addition to completing all requirements for a BA in Art, students enrolled in the honors program must adhere to and complete the following:
- Maintain a 3.6 GPA in all UW ART classes
- Maintain a 3.3 UW cumulative GPA
- Complete ART 480: Cross-Disciplinary Honors in Art
- Complete an additional 400 or 500 level Art studio class
- Complete an Honors-level portfolio
- Participate in a senior capstone Honors Exhibition
Capstone
One of the exceptional components of the honors program is the expectation for students to showcase their artwork for the Spring Honors exhibition in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.
Admissions
Eligibility
- Must be an Art major
- Have completed a minimum of 20 credits of ART courses (at least 10 must have been at UW)
- At least (25) credits left to complete the BA in Art degree
- GPA of 3.6 or higher in all UW ART classes
- UW cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher
Application Process
Students who meet the requirements must apply by submitting the Honors application. You must submit all the required materials listed below to be considered for the program by the deadline: February 28, 2025.
Required Materials
Portfolio
- (6) images or (3) videos. You can include one additional detail image per work submitted. Image should be in JPG and should not exceed 1 MB. Video should be a max of three separate videos, and not exceed a total of 7 minutes.
- Image List: include title, year created, size, media, and 1-2 sentence description for each image. For video, include active URL links.
- All work must have been completed since arrival at UW. The selection committee is looking for evidence of independent work. work created outside of class assignments is encouraged.
Statement of Intent
Respond to each of these two prompts (1 page double-spaced):
- Is there a common approach, material, or subject matter in your artwork?
- Tell us about any plans you have for your artwork in your Senior year.
