Autumn 2020 Part-Time Faculty

Submitted on September 28, 2020 - 1:34pm

The School typically has several part-time faculty each quarter. These are the people filling those roles during autumn quarter 2020:

Arely Morales

Painting + Drawing, website

My work focuses on issues of identity, humanity, and invisibility of the Latino immigrant community in the U.S. This interest has a strong connection to my personal life experiences of being an immigrant myself. Born in Mexico, I moved to the U.S at age 14.

In my work, I am interested in exploring these issues and the vulnerabilities that take place within this group. I share with the viewer aspects of our lives that make us human and that often remain unseen. I seek to create a clarity that makes my subjects feel visible and present, as they exist.

UW holds a special place in my heart. I am excited for this opportunity to teach and help students grow and explore their creativity.

Jayme Yen

Visual Communication Design, website

I am a graphic designer with a background in publication design and designing for the arts. My research interests include artists’ books, independent publishing, mapping, and visualizing information. My work spans magazines, books, posters, art exhibitions, and more. Previously, I was the communications and design director at On the Boards, a performance arts center, and a creative director at Schema Design, an information design firm in Seattle. I co-founded the Seattle Art Book Fair (launching 2021), and I produce an occasional zine about language called IDIOM. This is my fifth year teaching at UW, and despite these unpredictable, uncertain times, I am looking forward to sharing time and (Zoom) space with students, supporting their curiosity and learning this quarter.

Joe Costello

Industrial Design, website, LinkedIn

I am a practicing physical and digital product designer proudly entering my second year as a guest lecturer with the Division of Design. In teaching, I employ a broad skill set honed from years in the field as a project lead at a small consultancy and ethically designing computer vision, machine learning, and augmented reality products at a large tech company. Last year, I found the new perspectives and creative energy that comes from teaching and collaboratively working with burgeoning designers to be endlessly rewarding. I look forward to another year of challenge and success, for both the students and myself.

Marcus Watson

Painting + Drawing

I am a native New Orleanian residing in Memphis, Tennessee, and teaching high school visual art. I received my MFA in Painting + Drawing from the University of Washington. My figurative work speaks of identity, personal memories, gay themes, nostalgic pop culture, and masculinity. The media that I dabble in are mostly charcoal, oil, and acrylic. Currently, I am creating a series involving my experience as a student attending a Catholic boys' high school in New Orleans.

Matthew J. Clark

Visual Communication Design, website

I am a creative director, director, and cinematographer who works with ad agencies, direct to client, and non-profit organizations creating in several mediums including broadcast, web content, brand films, and experiential exhibits. My work gravitates towards non-fiction, but it is informed by years of working in VFX, design, music videos, and narrative work. I started at the early age of 10 with still photography and eventually began tinkering with motion photography. My first paid gig was in high school, shooting professional bike racing in Frankfurt, Germany. I went on to study at NYU’s Tisch School For The Arts focused on film production. With the pull of skiing and mountain biking on the West Coast irresistible, I came back to the PNW where my career has taken off. In my palmares, you’ll find an Emmy nomination, Telly Awards, Addy Awards, a staff pick filmmaker on Vimeo, and screenings of his work world wide.

I am looking forward to working with students to inspire their motion design skills and to learn a thing or two myself. The invigorating environment of learning and creating has always stimulated my own creativity and motivated me to create new work.

Melanie Enderle

Art History

I am an art historian who has been associated with the UW since 2003. I also teach regularly at Seattle Pacific University as well as several area colleges, and I have been an educator at Seattle Art Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art. I received an MA in British art and literature from Reading University in England and my art history PhD at the University of Washington.

My research is socio-cultural driven with interests in modern European and American images of public spaces, gendered behavior, and representations of women. Recent publications include “The Reflective Eye of Walter Sickert: Mirroring Male Victorian Dominance in the Era of the New Woman,” “The Empowered Ingénue: Women Stepping Out as Solo Performers Onstage,” and “Windows on the Soul: Portraits by Major American Artists."

Michael Smith

Interaction Design, LinkedIn

I am currently the director of design at Substantial, an independent innovation and build studio in Seattle, where I lead research and design. I recently was director of the University of Washington's interdisciplinary graduate program in human-computer interaction and design, senior lecturer of interaction design, and a principal interaction designer at frog. Throughout my career, I have done product design, research, and strategy for retail, mobility, enterprise software, legal, and early-stage startup companies. I am excited to be back at the School of Art + Art History + Design this autumn to teach design research and discursive design.
