Director Notes
Greetings from the School of Art + Art History + Design. Winter quarter is in full swing here on campus and students are braving the elements to focus on ideating, writing, drawing, experimenting, prototyping, and making. Most days still feel cold and gloomy so the tendency is to want to stay in bed and sleep until spring. Despite living in Seattle for over 20 years, I concur with that sentiment! But on we must go, and the gift of a deadline can be a powerful motivator.
Speaking of deadlines, our new School website will launch at the end of February. The site will improve the user experience, feature more time-sensitive information, and highlight student and faculty research in the top-level menu. It will also strengthen our connection to the College of Art & Sciences and the University by better aligning with the UW brand.
We hope you will join us for some exciting programming in the School in the coming weeks. Of particular note is artists & poets which opened in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery last Thursday, and the Kollar Lecture on American Art on February 27 in the Intellectual House.
Despite the bustle of activity here, we are cognizant of the rapidly shifting federal policies that will affect students, staff, and faculty in the School and across campus. If you are interested, the Provost has a website with up-to-date information including institutional resources.
In addition, President Cauce maintains a blog with resources on how to navigate the uncertainty that comes with rapid change. Recent posts cover efforts by UW to protect research and reiterate the university’s mission and values.
The School of Art + Art History + Design is committed to providing our students, staff, and faculty with a safe, supportive environment where everyone can learn and thrive.
We hope you are all well,
Annabelle Gould
