Autumn Activities

Warmest congratulations to our students, faculty, and staff for completing an autumn quarter like no other. While the hallways of the Art Building were unusually empty and void of end-of-quarter work for final critiques, the digital realm is very much alive. We are pleased to share with you some of the activities that occurred throughout the past few months within the UW and out in our broader creative community.

Art

Honors students in the Division of Art — under the guidance of Teaching Professor Timea Tihanyi — created a book titled The Creative Process. It debuted on December 14.

Interdisciplinary Visual Art students in ART 400 (IVA Senior Studio), taught by Associate Professor Curt Labitzke, shared their work in an online exhibition titled Stillness.

Speaking of Curt Labitzke, his remote teaching of printmaking was featured in a September University of Washington Magazine article.

Professor Rebecca Cummins was involved these two recent items:

Her work was added to Pause/Play, which is Gallery 4Culture's online space.
She was a co-organizer and participant in a gathering of eclipse-watching artists on December 14.

Assistant Professor Rob Rhee had a virtual visit with the chief curator at Frye Art Museum in October.

Art History

Assistant Professor Juliet Sperling, holder of the Kollar Endowed Chair in American Art, is the subject of a December University of Washington Magazine article. The portrait of her used in the article was painted by alum Miha Sarani.

Assistant Professor Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse participated in two discussions with Native artists through her curatorial role at the Burke Museum:

A conversation with the artists who created the new public art piece, Guests from the Great River, at the east entrance of the museum.
A conversation with two of the co-curators for the Northwest Coast Native Art Gallery in the museum.

Design

Alum Maurice (Mo) Woods visited DESIGN 301 (Current Issues) on October 29. Watch a video of his talk titled "Being the Change."

Sixteen Division of Design students shared their summer experiences in the annual pecha kucha event.
