The School of Art + Art History + Design is excited to announce the renaming and expansion of the MFA in Photo/Media program to MFA in New Genres. This renaming officially took place as of September 2024 as a way to accurately reflect the work the program continues to emphasize.
Similarly, at the undergraduate level, faculty are currently working on the development of a curriculum that integrates New Genres, Photography, and Video, mirroring the combinations of areas of study in the Division of Art: Painting + Drawing + Printmaking, and 3D4M: Sculpture + Glass + Ceramics. Until then the department will continue to offer a BA in Art: Photo/Media concentration to undergraduate students.
Graduate Program
The MFA in New Genres expands on the historic MFA in Photo/Media Program and builds off the experimental history of conceptual art starting in the 20th and 21st century. The adoption of “New Genres” creates an interdisciplinary and conceptual program that highlights the limitless approaches to uses of media as it endeavors to support artists who critically respond to culture by creating meaningful and engaged artworks. Just like its predecessor MFA in Photo/Media, the MFA in New Genres program is where potential artworks produced include—but are not limited to—analog photography, digital imaging, time-based media, sound art, media technologies, performance, publications, writing, theater, and installation.
Faculty & Technician Expansion
This expansion of the historic Photo/Media program integrates both an Interdisciplinary Visual Art (IVA) faculty member and a technician. Photo/Media faculty members Rebecca Cummins, Flint Jamison, and victor yáñez-lazcano and Instructional Technician Ilysia Van Deren are joined by IVA Associate Professor Whitney Lynn and Technician Garrett Hamlow. The department is currently searching for a tenure-track faculty member to join the Photo/Media + New Genres program next fall. Meet the Photo/Media + New Genres faculty.
