In Memoriam – Doug Jeck
The School is sad to announce the passing of Associate Professor Doug Jeck on February 7. He taught at the University of Washington from 1996 to 2022. A new student support fund has been created in his honor.

In Memoriam – Michael C. Spafford
The School of Art + Art History + Design is sad to share the passing of Professor Emeritus Michael C. Spafford on January 29, 2022. He taught at the University of Washington from 1963 to 1994.

The School is very pleased to announce the hiring of Jennifer Baez and Caitlin Earley for two Latin American art history positions. Both will join the UW faculty in September 2022 as tenure-track assistant professors.

BAM Biennial 2021: Architecture & Urban Design

Symposium Synopsis
On April 30, 2021, the Division of Design hosted a virtual event titled A Symposium on Design Graduate Education. The meeting was co-organized by Audrey Desjardins, James Pierce, and Annabelle Gould.

Transitions 2021
It is typical for the School to see changes in faculty and staff from one year to the next, but this year was unusual for the number of staff departures. Two moved into higher level positions in other units, and three retired.

Q+A with Claire Cowie and Leo Berk
This couple are both MFA alums. They are currently working on their first large-scale artistic collaboration at MadArt Studio: Niche Audience. The resulting exhibition opens on October 14 and runs through November 20.

Audrey Desjardins: Data Imaginaries
The Jacob Lawrence Gallery is pleased to present Audrey Desjardins: Data Imaginaries, featuring the work of Audrey Desjardins, Assistant Professor of Interaction Design. The exhibition runs from September 21 through October 9.

Dianne Harris named dean of UW College of Arts & Sciences
University of Washington Provost Mark A. Richards today announced Dianne Harris will become dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, beginning September 1.

George Tsutakawa’s art on display at Seattle Art Museum
The late Tsutakawa was an alum (BA 1937, MFA 1950) and faculty. He started teaching at UW in 1946 and became a professor emeritus in 1976.
