BA in Art Departmental Honors Program: Updates from Current Students
Background
The start of this academic year brought layers of anxious excitement for our new cohort of BA in Art Departmental Honors students. This group of 17 were selected through a competitive admission process during the year prior, and for many of them, this autumn was their first time stepping onto the UW campus, their first quarter in the UW Art Building, and their first time meeting their classmates in real life.

2022 MDes Work in Progress
Eight Master of Design students are working towards graduation in June 2022. In mid-December, they shared their current thesis work in an online session, and they are now ready to share that further.

Background
Noah Simblist is associate professor in the Painting + Printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also works as a curator, writer, and artist with a focus on art and politics, specifically the ways in which contemporary artists address history.

A Designer Reflects on "Making It"
It’s a good thing Adam Kingman listens to his sisters. One sister encouraged him to consider the University of Washington when he was applying to colleges. The other nudged him to apply to Making It, a TV competition hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, in which talented makers complete a series of handmade projects.

2022 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency
The Jacob Lawrence Gallery and Wa Na Wari are thrilled to announce that Lauren Williams will be the 2022 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Resident. Williams, a designer, researcher, and educator based in Detroit, will be in residence at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery during the month of January 2022, and will present a new body of work, created in collaboration with Malcolm Cunningham.

The sixth volume of MONDAY, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery’s arts journal, will debut February 3, 2022.

Interdisciplinary Visual Art Assistant Professor Whitney Lynn participated in PSA Miami and Untitled Art Miami Beach 2021.
In November Photo/Media Professor Rebecca Cummins was artist-in-resident at Joshua Tree Center for Photographic Arts and won third place in Lenscratch's Art + Science Award: The Heart of the Matter.
Emily Gherard (MFA 2004) received an inaugural Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship, which annually awards 15 artists working in the evolving fields of painting and sculpture.
Mel Carter (BFA 2014) is one of the 2021 Emerging Artist Residents at Centrum.
Lisa Snow Lady (BA 1979, BFA 1991) received a SOLA Award from Artist Trust.
Several design students and alums were GRAY Awards finalists: Ho Kwon Kim (Industrial Design senior) for iD Dial and Emery Burkhalter (BDes 2021), Sami Everheart (BDes 2021), and Min Jung Koo (BDes 2021) for Silka.
Interaction Design senior Olivia Quesada received a 2021/2022 AIGA Worldstudio Scholarship.
Greg Kucera (BA 1980) left Seattle with large gifts to Artist Trust and the School's Art Building Campaign before moving to France.
Nathan Vass (BFA 2009) and Luly Yang (BFA 1990) were listed amongst Seattle Met's 100 most influential people in Seattle.
We are sad to announce the passing of Owen Smith (BA 1980, PhD 1991).
