MONDAY was a journal of arts writing that invited readers to imagine future forms of criticism. Published from 2018 through 2022, it featured six volumes that reflected a broad and evolving approach to contemporary cultural discourse. Contributors wrote in a range of accessible yet rigorous forms, engaging subjects that extended from the fine arts to diverse modes of cultural expression. Together, their work affirmed that approaches to criticism could be as varied as the ideas and themes they explored. Each year, one of MONDAY’s biannual print publications was produced under the editorial guidance of the Jacob Lawrence Legacy Resident.

Volumes

Printed copies of the journal were distributed through bookstores across Seattle, including University Book Store, Elliott Bay Book Company, Third Place Books, Bulldog News, Kinokuniya Seattle, and Village Books, as well as through online purchase. In 2020, a website was created extending the journal’s reach by sharing selected texts from Volume 4 onward. As of 2025, the website and print sales were discontinued; however, free copies of the journal are still available in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.

The Jake Journal

MONDAY expands on the legacy of the The Jake Journal, created for and by students and published by the Gallery. Five issues were created and published between Autumn 2025 and Winter 2016. You can view and download digital copies (PDF):
