THIS COURSE FOCUSES ON EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES TO MATERIAL IN CONTEMPORARY ART. IN THIS COURSE YOU WILL TREAT MATERIAL NOT AS A MEANS TO AN END BUT AN END IN ITSELF. THROUGH READING, DISCUSSION, AND LOTS OF PERSONAL EXPERIMENTATION YOU WILL DEFINE AND DEVELOP A PERSONAL MATERIAL (OR SET OF MATERIALS) FOR A VISUAL ART CONTEXT. THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE PROMPTS FOR SELF-DIRECTED INQUIRY AND STRUCTURES FOR SHARING NOVEL PHENOMENA, MEANINGFUL CONTEXT, AND IN-PROCESS DISCUSSION. STUDENTS MUST ATTEND THE FIRST DAY ORDER TO REMAIN IN THE COURSE.
Catalog Description:
Examines relationship of material and meaning, focusing on the ethics, politics, and poetics of utilizing both traditional and experimental art materials. Projects culminate in artworks and aesthetic presentations of research. Mixed seminar and studio course.
