This course surveys arts of the United States in the first half of the 20^th century. Situates images, visual practices, and artistic styles of the period within their social, historical, and cultural contexts. Major topics include American art's relation to urbanism, modern technology, race, ethnicity, immigration, political struggles, popular culture, modernism, and postmodernism.
