Despite the blossom fest coming much later in the season than any of us can remember, we were immensely relieved and grateful when the certificate of occupancy for our newly renovated spaces was granted, as promised, just in time for the quarter to begin.

Job Opening: Computer Support Technician 2 (Part-Time, Temp)
The Computer Support Technician 2 will provide computer lab and equipment support to faculty, staff and students in the SoA+AH+D.

Constituency Relations Officer
Please share! We are excited to announce our opening for a Constituency Relations Officer who "will plan, manage, and implement School efforts to build relationships with alumni and friends of the school, attract private support from individuals and promote the school regionally, nationally, and globally."

Media Relations Specialist
We are happy to announce an opportunity for a person who wants to be an integral part of the School. Our Media Relations Specialist is a critical, full-time staff position. The application deadline is November 15.

2022–2023 Scholarships
The School is proud to share this year's scholarship recipients. This includes awards to incoming freshmen / transfer students as well as those to continuing undergraduate and graduate students in all three divisions.

Transitions 2022
The School has not been immune to the societal shifts the pandemic has introduced resulting in several changes in staff and faculty since last autumn.

Pierce Receives NSF CAREER Award
This is the NSF's "most prestigious award in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization."

Faculty Searches for 2023
The School is excited to announce an opportunity for three tenure-track faculty appointments, two in the Division of Art (Dale Chihuly Endowed Chair of Glass and Photo/Media) and one in the Division of Design (Visual Communication Design).

2022 Graduate Showcase
We are pleased to announce publication of the 2022 Graduate Showcase. This website presents the work of 19 recently graduated students who received Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Arts (MA), or Master of Design (MDes) degrees.

President's Medalist
Congratulations to Tiffany-Ashton Gatsby! They were one of two graduating University of Washington undergraduates awarded a 2022 President's Medal. UW President Ana Mari Cauce presented the medal to Gatsby on June 9 at the Awards of Excellence ceremony.

Simpson Center Support for Art History
Two Art History faculty — Adair Rounthwaite and Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse — and two Art History graduate students — Nicole Block and Ananya Sikand — have received 2022–2023 funding from the UW Simpson Center for the Humanities.

2022 Graduation + Teaching Awards
Six graduate students and four undergraduates were recognized with individual awards at our in-person Graduation Celebration, plus one undergraduate received a President's Medal. Five students also gave short presentations during the ceremony.

In Memoriam – Richard Proctor
The School is sad to announce the passing of Associate Professor Emeritus Richard Proctor on April 11, 2022. He taught at the University of Washington from 1962 to 1992.

Online Symposium – Dismantling the Body
GSAH invites you to a two-day virtual symposium “Dismantling the Body: Possibilities and Limitations in Art Making” on May 18–19, 2022. The event features two keynote speakers and four panels.

2022 Graduation Exhibitions
Each year the School proudly celebrates graduating Art and Design students with a series of exhibitions at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and the Henry Art Gallery. Join us for one or more of these in April, May, and June.

2022 MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Nine Master of Fine Arts and eight Master of Design students are participating in this graduation exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from May 27 through June 26, 2022.

Emily Zimmerman Departs
After five years as the director + curator of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the University of Washington, Emily Zimmerman will depart her post April 8, 2022. The School will soon launch a national search for her replacement.

In Memoriam – Doug Jeck
The School is sad to announce the passing of Associate Professor Doug Jeck on February 7. He taught at the University of Washington from 1996 to 2022. A new student support fund has been created in his honor.

The Jacob Lawrence Gallery and Wa Na Wari are thrilled to announce that Lauren Williams will be the 2022 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Resident. Williams is a designer, researcher, and educator based in Detroit.

Free Materials Library
This resource for School students opened at the beginning of autumn quarter 2021. It contains new and gently used materials and books that students may choose for use in their classes. We welcome donations to the library.

Arts Capital Campaign + Renovations
The Arts Capital Campaign, to fund renovations in the Art and Music Buildings, is progressing. Work in the Art Building begins in late June 2022. Join us in supporting this important project.

Transitions 2021
It is typical for the School to see changes in faculty and staff from one year to the next, but this year was unusual for the number of staff departures. Two moved into higher level positions in other units, and three retired.

Murmurations
May brings the launch of Murmurations, a new Seattle-wide arts collaboration spearheaded by six cultural institutions: Frye Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Northwest Film Forum, On the Boards, and Velocity Dance Center.

New Faculty for 2021
The School is pleased to announce the hiring of one new faculty member for each of our divisions: Sangram Manjumdar (Painting + Drawing), Miriam Chusid (Japanese Art History), and Meichun Liu (Industrial Design).

2021 Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award
The recipient of this year's award is Ron Chew, a lifelong Seattleite who has made significant cultural contributions to the city. An online event to celebrate him takes place on Friday, May 14, starting at 6pm.

2021 MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design students — all graduating in 2021 and some from 2020 — are participating in this exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from May 29 through June 27, 2021.

Each year the School proudly celebrates graduating Art and Design students — both undergraduate and graduate — with a series of exhibitions at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and the Henry Art Gallery. We have a combination of online and in-person exhibitions this year.

First Floor Renovation
An idea born six years ago will become a reality in the next two years. The result will be a more visible location for the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and upgrades for other spaces.

In Memoriam – Bill Holm
The School of Art + Art History + Design is sad to announce the passing of Art History Professor Emeritus Bill Holm, expert on Northwest Coast Native art, on December 16, 2020.

2021 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency
The Jacob Lawrence Gallery is thrilled to announce that Ariel René Jackson will be the 2021 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Resident. Jackson’s film-based multidisciplinary practice considers land and landscape as sites of internal representation.

Director's Notes
It was a summer like no other. A reduced schedule of classes was all taught online and most staff worked remotely. Only a handful of faculty, staff, and graduate students were to be found in our buildings…
