The School's advising team is thrilled to be co-facilitating a new course for undergraduates during winter quarter 2018 — ARTS 350: Arts in Collaboration. Alumni from the visual and performing arts are participating.

Ahn an Amazon Catalyst Fellow
Industrial Design Associate Professor Sang-gyeun Ahn is co-PI on a project that will develop a modular kit to modify wheelchairs for the safe use of public restrooms. They have received Amazon Catalyst funding.

In Memoriam – Donghoon Lee
We are very sad to report that Photomedia student Donghoon Lee passed away during the summer. His family and friends have dedicated a memorial bench to him in the Quad.

In Memoriam – Ron Ho
We are sad to report the passing of Ron Ho. He was a renowned jewelry artist, alum, and supporter of School students for many years through the Lambda Rho Alumni Association.

Roberts Wins Swiss Award
3D4M Lecturer Kate Roberts was invited to participate in this year's Parcours Céramique Carougeois in Switzerland. She built Gate to nowhere on site, and she won the Fondation Bruckner Award.

Boettcher is New BMA Director
Graham Boettcher (MA 1999) was recently appointed as the new R. Hugh Daniel Director at the Birmingham Museum of Art. He has served the museum in several roles since 2006.

2017–2018 Undergraduate Scholarships
A number of named scholarships support more than thirty students this academic year. The recipients and donors are recognized at an invitation-only event on October 12.

2018 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency
The School and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery are pleased to announce that Seattle artist C. Davida Ingram is the recipient of the 2018 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency.

Jamison is Hallie Ford Fellow
Photomedia Assistant Professor Aaron Flint Jamison was selected as one of five 2017 Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts. An exhibition at Pacific Northwest College of Art displays the work of the fellows.

Simpson Center Support
The UW Simpson Center for the Humanities recently announced its Spring 2017 Awards to support work during the 2017-2018 academic year. Three people from the School are involved in these projects.

Grant from NEA Art Works
The School and Jacob Lawrence Gallery are pleased to announce a $20,000 grant from the Art Works program of the National Endowment for the Arts, which will support the Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency.

Graduate Medalist in the Arts
Erin Giffin, who completed her PhD this month, was chosen by the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences as the Graduate Medalist in the Arts. The medalists are selected from faculty nominations.

Graduation + Teaching Awards
Ten students were recognized with awards at our Graduation Celebration on June 10. One of the students, Erin Giffin, also was the recipient of the Arts & Sciences 2017 Dean's Graduate Medal in the Arts.

Alums Win Artist Trust Fellowships
Artist Trust announced the recipients of their 2017 Fellowship Award Program in a May 15 press release. Six of the sixteen selected artists are School alums. Each will receive an unrestricted award of $7,500. Congratulations!

AFALA Evening Amazes
What a night! The School hosted its first Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award event on April 29. We honored 2017 award winner Beth Sellars, heard from alum Jenny Sabin, and raised over $62,000 for graduate student support.

MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Fourteen Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design students are participating in this graduation show at the Henry Art Gallery. The public opening reception is June 2, 7–8:30pm, and the exhibition continues through June 25.

Strange Coupling 2017
A student-run Division of Art tradition for over a decade, Strange Coupling bridges the gap between the UW and the greater Seattle art community by pairing students with professional artists for a collaborative project.

2017 Graduation Exhibitions
Each year we celebrate graduating Art and Design undergraduate and graduate students with a series of exhibitions in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and Henry Art Gallery. Join us for one or more of these events.

Jacob Lawrence Centenary
This year marks 100 years since the birth of Jacob Lawrence. Seattle became his home in 1970 when he arrived to teach at the University of Washington. The University and the city are celebrating him in many ways.

Faculty Candidate Lectures
Finalists for two full-time, tenure-track faculty positions — one in Art History and one in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts — are visiting campus. Each candidate will give a lecture.

In Memoriam – Akio Takamori
The School is sad to announce the passing of 3D4M Professor Emeritus Akio Takamori on January 11, 2017. He joined the School faculty in 1993 and taught until his retirement in 2014.

Graduation Celebration 2017
This event for graduating students takes place on Saturday, June 10, before the University's commencement ceremony. Tickets are required for attending students and guests.

New Director for Jacob Lawrence Gallery
Emily Zimmerman becomes Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery in January 2017. Her strong background in curatorial work will be an asset to the Gallery and the School.

In Memoriam – Francis Celentano
Professor Emeritus Francis Celentano passed away on November 20, 2016. He joined the faculty at the UW in 1966 and retired from teaching in 1993. A memorial gathering is planned for January 28 in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.

2017 Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice
This 7-speaker series starts on January 12 and ends on March 9. All lectures are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. Sponsored by The Boeing Company.

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award
The School is pleased to present the 2017 Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award to Beth Sellars. Curator, artist, museum leader, teacher, and public art manager, she embodies the power of arts leadership.

Gallery Director Position Open
The School is seeking a new Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. This position provides curatorial, operational, and administrative leadership for the Gallery. Apply by Nov 17 to ensure consideration.

Alum in Residence: Anne Focke
The School is happy to name Anne Focke as the Alum in Residence for the 2016-2017 academic year. This is a new role, and it will be shaped largely by the person who holds the position.
