Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award Celebration
This spring, 150 friends of the School gathered for the Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award Celebration. Nearly $70,000 was raised in support of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery during the event and will be matched by an anonymous donor.

Husky 100
Each year, the University of Washington recognizes 100 students from across all three campuses. Just-graduated Art History MA students Juan Franco Ricardo and Miha Sarani were both selected for 2019.

IDSA Student Merit Award Winner
Grace Budgett, who just completed her Bachelor of Design degree, was selected in May by the Industrial Designers Society of America as the 2019 West District Student Merit Award Winner.

Alum Sherry Markovitz received the Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Achievement. Alums Joe Feddersen and Kristen Ramirez won fellowships, and spring quarter faculty member Romson Bustillo won a fellowship along with a residency in Bali.

George Rodriguez (MFA 2009) joined the School's Advisory Board earlier this year and has a project at MadArt Studio in April and May. He has been receiving growing recognition for his artwork.

IxD Students at Cooper Hewitt
Five junior-level students in Interaction Design answered a challenge from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Their design was selected and shown at the museum plus they made a presentation there.

Our Interaction Design professors — Audrey Desjardins and Axel Roesler — recently received awards from major industry partners that will allow them to further their research and involve students in the process.

Tihanyi + Digital Clay
IVA Senior Lecturer and alum Timea Tihanyi has a background in medicine and ceramics. Her recent work, supported by multiple awards, focuses on 3D-printed clay in collaboration with mathematicians and others.

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award
Named for an alum, this award recognizes individuals who have worked to enliven and strengthen our world through visionary and active leadership. The 2019 honoree will be announced in March, and there will be a celebratory dinner in April.

Rometti Prize
The School has sent students to the Rometti Prize competition in Italy for five years, but the 2018 competition included several firsts, one of which was the top prize going to one or our students.

2018–2019 Scholarships

Neddy Artist Awards
IVA Senior Lecturer and alum Timea Tihanyi won the Open Medium category! Photomedia Assistant Professor Aaron Flint Jamison was a finalist. Both will have work in a November 14 to December 16 exhibition.

4Culture Project Grants
The King County cultural funding agency announced over $1 million in project grants in mid-June. A faculty member (Tihanyi), current graduate student (Franco), and several alums are among the recipients.

2018 SEGD Educator Award Winner
Visual Communication Design Associate Professor Kristine Matthews won the 2018 SEGD Educator Award, which was announced at the early June SEGD conference in Minneapolis. She is the first recipient of this award.

Ahn an Amazon Catalyst Fellow
Industrial Design Associate Professor Sang-gyeun Ahn is co-PI on a project that will develop a modular kit to modify wheelchairs for the safe use of public restrooms. They have received Amazon Catalyst funding.

Quackers is a Hit
Alum Liz Wong's first children's book, Quackers, is receiving widespread recognition, including being chosen for Jumpstart's 12th Read for the Record event, which took place in all 50 states and over 60 countries.

Xu is Hamiltonian Fellow
Alum Ellen (Jing) Xu was selected as one of the five Hamiltonian Fellows for 2017–2019 from a pool of 158 artists. The Hamiltonian Fellowship program focuses on professional development.

Roberts Wins Swiss Award
3D4M Lecturer Kate Roberts was invited to participate in this year's Parcours Céramique Carougeois in Switzerland. She built Gate to nowhere on site, and she won the Fondation Bruckner Award.

MoNA Luminaries
Painting + Drawing Professor Zhi Lin is one of the 2017 recipients of a Luminary Artist Award from the Museum of Northwest Art. Two other artists with School ties were recognized at this event.

2017–2018 Undergraduate Scholarships
A number of named scholarships support more than thirty students this academic year. The recipients and donors are recognized at an invitation-only event on October 12.

RRF Scholar Award for Khullar
Art History Associate Professor Sonal Khullar received a Royalty Research Fund Scholar Award for her book project Fertile Grounds: Art, Primitivism, and Postcoloniality in Twentieth-Century India and Britain.

HUB Director's Art Prize
A painting titled Juan Jose by Arely Morales was chosen for the 2017 prize. The location in the HUB is being selected, so look for it during autumn quarter.

Jamison is Hallie Ford Fellow
Photomedia Assistant Professor Aaron Flint Jamison was selected as one of five 2017 Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts. An exhibition at Pacific Northwest College of Art displays the work of the fellows.
