The article considers writings about images in early American literature such as an 1859 essay by Oliver Wendell Holmes on the stereograph in the "Atlantic Monthly." It also considers the c. 1787 religious flap book "The Metamorphosis; or, A Transformation of Pictures" by Benjamin Sands, and the similar c. 1790 handmade “The Metamorphosis by Henry G. Jenks.
