Mackie Johnson, NE 92nd St, 2025.

"My whole life has taken place in the proximity of NE 92nd St. I’ve passed over the street by foot, car, and bike hundreds if not thousands of times. For years this street was littered with massive potholes and disappointing patches. I created the NE 92nd St series of artworks as the street underwent drain repairs and was an active construction site in early 2025. This series includes satirical sculptures and a handmade book that question our collective acceptance of everyday road conditions and repair practices. Materials sourced from NE 92nd St manifest themselves within the artwork in the form of asphalt fragments and text, directly critiquing the condition of the street."

Mackie Johnson is a lifelong Seattle resident and Supersonics fan. Their artistic practice combines bookbinding, photography, and sculpture. Through this work, Johnson reflects on how they negotiate familiar sites – seeking to understand the spaces they inhabit physically and socially. They received their BA in Photo/Media Art from the University of Washington, where they were nominated for the Parnassus Graduating with Excellence Award in 2025.
