Modeling Black Piety and Community Membership in the Virgin of Altagracia Medallions

Jennifer Baez, “Modeling Black Piety and Community Membership in the Virgin of Altagracia Medallions,” Arts 10, no. 2 (2021): 37.

This article discusses the significance of the Black bodies pictured in paintings of miracles produced for the sanctuary of the Virgin of Altagracia in 18th century Hispaniola. Through a contrapuntal analysis of a church decree that desegregates annual cultic Altagraciano celebrations, the article argues the images helped model Black piety, creole patriotism, and community membership within a socioracial order.
