The UW campus in Seattle is beautiful, but finding one’s way across it has often proved confusing. Now, thanks to 23 guide signs installed at the beginning of autumn quarter 2016, that situation is greatly improved.

Artist Trust Funds Alums
Several School alums won grants and awards from Artist Trust this year, including the Twining Humber Award, two fellowships, and three GAP awards.

Write On! Lives On
A 2010 Exhibition Design class project by two graduate and two undergraduate students has been reborn in new postcard products now available through online retailer Knock Knock.

MoNA Luminaries
Professor Denzil Hurley is one of the 2016 MoNA Luminaries. Several School alumni, including three Professors Emeriti, were involved in these awards from the Museum of Northwest Art.

Student Work at Meany Hall
Seventeen pieces were selected by School Director Jamie Walker for display during the 2016-2017 academic year. The next time you attend an event at Meany Hall, be sure to see the exhibition.

9e2 in Seattle
9e2 takes place October 21 to 29 at King Street Station and other venues. Installations include work by Senior Lecturer Timea Tihanyi and two other alums. Another alum is involved in one of the performances.

Matched Makers: Northwest Artist Couples
The Museum of Northwest Art hosts this exhibition from October 1, 2016 to January 1, 2017. Associate Professor Mark Zirpel, full-time Lecturer Claire Cowie, several former professors, and a number of alumni are included.

2016 Genius + Neddy Awards
School alums did well this year in two local competitions. Three were finalists for the Neddy Artist Award, and two were nominated for a Stranger Genius Award. Barbara Earl Thomas won a Genius Award. A Neddy exhibit runs through Oct 23 with several events.

Alum in Residence: Anne Focke
The School is happy to name Anne Focke as the Alum in Residence for the 2016-2017 academic year. This is a new role, and it will be shaped largely by the person who holds the position.

Pair Wins IDEA Silver
Miles Miller and Christoffer Hart learned in August that their Naloxone OD Rescue Kit, designed in their last quarter before receiving their BDes degrees, was a Silver category IDEA 2016 winner in this IDSA competition.

Pottery NW at 50
Pottery Northwest, a Seattle institution both literally and figuratively, was founded in 1966. As part of celebrating their 50th anniversary, they are posting weekly interviews with notable people in their history, including some School-related folks.

Garvens + Alums in Things That Kill
Sep 1 – Oct 29 at Prographica/KDR: This thematic exhibition, curated by Professor Emeritus Norman Lundin, includes work by Photomedia Professor Ellen Garvens as well as several alumni. Interviews with some artists are on the Prographica blog.

Holland Named Iowa Arts Council Fellow
Brent Holland (MFA 2004) received a $10,000 Iowa Arts Council Artist Fellowship. He was one of five people selected for this year's awards. He is also an Associate Professor of Art and Visual Culture at Iowa State University.

Zhu Wins HUB Director's Award
Two paintings by Kewei Zhu, who just earned his BFA in Painting + Drawing, have been selected for the 2016 HUB Director's Award. The paintings become part of the HUB Permanent Art Collection.

BAM Biennial 2016: Metalmorphosis
September 2, 2016 – February 5, 2017: One current staff member and alumnus (Andrew Fallat), a professor emeritus, and fourteen other alumni are among the artists with work in this Bellevue Arts Museum exhibition.

2016 Microsoft Research Design Expo
Five 2016 graduates of Interaction Design participated in the Faculty Summit on July 13, which was part of Microsoft Research's annual Design Expo. They presented Polly, a CUI that engages young people in political conversation.

2016 Seattle Art Fair + Gallery Shows
Seattle Art Fair returns to the CenturyLink Field Event Center for a second year after its success in 2015. It runs August 4–7. As happened last year, there are numerous concurrent shows in local galleries. Alumni and faculty will have work on exhibit.

Out of Sight
This massive exhibition in King Street Station surveys contemporary Pacific Northwest art. It opens at the same time as Seattle Art Fair, but it will run through August. Multiple School-related people are involved or are showing work.

Active Art History Graduate Students
MA and PhD students in the Division of Art History are often busy with research, writing, presentations, and projects. We report on the recent and upcoming activities of five continuing students and two newly-minted PhDs.

Hirsch Publishing + Presenting
Interaction Design Professor Tad Hirsch has had an article and book chapter published recently. He also traveled to two conferences — CHI 2016 in San Jose, California, and DIS 2016 in Brisbane, Australia — to give presentations co-authored with graduating MDes students.

Mintz Moves to Asian Art Museum
In May, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco announced that Robert Mintz (MA 1995, PhD 2002) has been appointed as the new Deputy Director, Art & Programs. He begins work there on July 5, 2016. Mintz has been at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, since 2006.

NW Art Now @ TAM
This exhibition is the Tacoma Art Museum’s most recent survey of regional contemporary art. Six of the twenty-four artists included are School alumni. The exhibition will be on view through September 4.

Matahoata at Musée du Quai Branly
Carol Ivory (MA 1982, PhD 1990) began seriously studying the art of the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, while a PhD student. She has recently curated the most comprehensive exhibition to date on this topic at Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.

Renee Erickson wins James Beard Award
Renee Erickson (BFA 1995) was praised in a late April 2016 bon appétit feature and then won a James Beard Award in early May.

Creative Capital Awards
We count three alumni and one faculty member who have received Creative Capital Awards with the most recent being this year.

Luly Yang Partners With Alaska
Luly Yang (BFA Design 1990) has partnered with Alaska Airlines to design new uniforms for all their employees.
Tropical Lab Residency
Did you know we have a Singapore connection? A Sand Point Gallery exhibit by a current student and an alumna shows work inspired by this residency. Tropical Lab founder Milenko Prvački gives a lecture on February 18.

Woods is AIGA SF 2016 Fellow
Maurice Woods (BFA Design 1995, MFA Design 2005) has been selected as one of two 2016 Fellows by the San Francisco chapter of AIGA because of his work with the Inneract Project. He will be honored at an event later this month.
BUY ART + Strange Coupling
BUY ART is working with Strange Coupling to create two very different events, offered at the same time, and sharing the same goal: support of UW Art majors and alumni. Both events start on Wednesday, March 2.

Design Alumni Statistics
Early in December 2015, links were added to Division of Design pages on the School website directing people to a new microsite documenting statistics about Design alumni. This is the culmination of a multi-year project spearheaded by Professor Karen Cheng and involving a number of students.

Horie a USA Distinguished Fellow
United States Artists, an organization based in Chicago, announced this year’s USA Fellows on November 10, 2015. Among the 37 selected from over 400 nominees was Ayumi Horie (MFA 2000). It is a huge honor to be selected as a fellow, and each fellow receives an unrestricted $50,000 award. Learn more about our previous recipients.
