Quackers is a Hit
Alum Liz Wong's first children's book, Quackers, is receiving widespread recognition, including being chosen for Jumpstart's 12th Read for the Record event, which took place in all 50 states and over 60 countries.

Xu is Hamiltonian Fellow
Alum Ellen (Jing) Xu was selected as one of the five Hamiltonian Fellows for 2017–2019 from a pool of 158 artists. The Hamiltonian Fellowship program focuses on professional development.

Making our Mark
This Bellevue Arts Museum exhibition from Nov 10 through Apr 8 shows many artists who have taught at Pratt Fine Arts Center. Among them are a number of our alums, including three who work here now.

MFA painter Arley Morales brings laborers into the limelight
Morales, a fine arts graduate and DACA recipient, took inspiration from Latino artists and a poet in developing her style.

Material Performance: Part II
This exhibition at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery brings together work by alums, faculty, and other artists. It runs Nov 8 through Dec 9 with a reception on Nov 9.

In Memoriam – Ron Ho
We are sad to report the passing of Ron Ho. He was a renowned jewelry artist, alum, and supporter of School students for many years through the Lambda Rho Alumni Association.

Boettcher is New BMA Director
Graham Boettcher (MA 1999) was recently appointed as the new R. Hugh Daniel Director at the Birmingham Museum of Art. He has served the museum in several roles since 2006.

IxD Delves into Mixed Reality
This past year, students in the Interaction Design (IxD) Program have explored the new possibilities of holographic interactions with a number of projects using the Microsoft HoloLens.

HUB Director's Art Prize
A painting titled Juan Jose by Arely Morales was chosen for the 2017 prize. The location in the HUB is being selected, so look for it during autumn quarter.

Out of Sight
It is the third year for this survey exhibition of contemporary Northwest art, which opens at the same time as Seattle Art Fair in early August and then runs every weekend through the end of the month.

Familiar Faces & New Voices
An exhibition at Tacoma Art Museum surveys Northwest art in their permanent collection. Eighteen of the sixty artists are School alums and/or faculty. The exhibition remains on view through summer 2019.

2017 Seattle Art Fair and Beyond
The School is once-again a cultural partner of the Fair. There are a number of School-affiliated people who have work being shown at the Fair as well as at Seattle-area exhibitions during the Fair.

4Culture Art Projects Grants
Early in the summer, 4Culture announced its 2017 Art Projects grants to individuals. Three alums received funding: Eirik Johnson, Paul Komada, and Margie Livingston.

Faculty + Alum in Anniversary Exhibition
Traver Gallery in Seattle is celebrating its fourtieth anniversary with a July exhibition that includes more than forty artists. Among them are three faculty, the School's Director, and one alum.

Bellingham National
The Whatcom Museum is showing the second Bellingham National Juried Art Exhibition until September 10. Sixty artworks by twenty-nine artists from around the country are on view. Four are our alums.

Undergrads Going Places
Many of our undergraduates do interesting and amazing things. Here are just a few examples of students and recent graduates furthering their education and experience in different ways.

SEGD Global Design Awards
Three projects led by Associate Professor Kristine Matthews won 2017 awards in Wayfinding and Interactive Experience. A fourth project with Professor Karen Cheng as design lead won in Public Installation.

Untold Passage
This Jacob Lawrence Gallery exhibition presents the work of artists recovering the unwritten histories of immigrant communities shown alongside the work of contemporary poets. Opens July 7 and runs through August 18.

Alums Win Artist Trust Fellowships
Artist Trust announced the recipients of their 2017 Fellowship Award Program in a May 15 press release. Six of the sixteen selected artists are School alums. Each will receive an unrestricted award of $7,500. Congratulations!

AFALA Evening Amazes
What a night! The School hosted its first Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award event on April 29. We honored 2017 award winner Beth Sellars, heard from alum Jenny Sabin, and raised over $62,000 for graduate student support.

Sabin is 2017 MoMA PS1 Young Architect
In February, Jenny Sabin Studio won this annual competition from a pool of fifty firms that was narrowed down to five finalists. Her project, Lumen, is on display at MoMA PS1 beginning in late June.

Meetup with Creative Entrepreneurs
The School's Student Voice Project periodically hosts meetups where current students learn from alums about life after graduation. On May 2, SVP partnered with the Undergraduate Women in Business to bring four creative entrepreneurs to talk about their work.

Solo Shows Abound
We rarely write about First Thursday, but this month we cannot ignore the unusual number of solo shows by our alums. We currently count eight one-person shows in the Pioneer Square area for May.

Design Career Fair: A Bridge to Work
In 2014, the Division of Design began hosting the Design Career Fair in response to growing demand from employers who increasingly wanted to invest in designers and design thinking to drive innovation in their organizations.

Randall Receives AIGA Medal
Congratulations to Mark Randall (BFA Design 1984), recipient of a 2017 AIGA Medal! This prestigious honor is being awarded for "his singular dedication to diversity in design, and his tenacity in funding minority and economically disadvantaged design students."

Facebook AIR Alums
Four alums — Evan Blackwell, Claire Cowie, Katy Stone, and Patrick "Duffy" De Armas in Electric Coffin — have created commissioned artworks at the Facebook Seattle offices since 2016. Facebook albums and a CityArts article provide numerous images.

Hosting Artists in the Lab
Biology Professor Jennifer Nemhauser leads a research laboratory of scientists, all immersed in the complex world of plant hormones. Claire Cowie — an artist, UW alumna and lecturer — spent three months as a part-time artist in residence in Nemhauser’s lab.

Art History at RSA in Chicago
The 2017 Renaissance Society of America conference had an unusually high participation by people with ties to the School. We count four faculty, three graduate students, and three alums. Were there more?

Strange Coupling 2017
A student-run Division of Art tradition for over a decade, Strange Coupling bridges the gap between the UW and the greater Seattle art community by pairing students with professional artists for a collaborative project.

NCECA 2017
March Madness means something different in the clay world because that is when the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts holds its annual conference with attendance in the thousands. This year it is in nearby Portland.

AND_NOW? Archaic Social Media
Arts Wire was the 1989 idea of Anne Focke. She and five interns inventoried early records while also doing an Instagram takeover, exhibit, and podcast series launch in February; a second exhibit in June; and concluding essays in July.
