
Bellingham National
The Whatcom Museum is showing the second Bellingham National Juried Art Exhibition until September 10. Sixty artworks by twenty-nine artists from around the country are on view. Four are our alums.

Untold Passage
This Jacob Lawrence Gallery exhibition presents the work of artists recovering the unwritten histories of immigrant communities shown alongside the work of contemporary poets. Opens July 7 and runs through August 18.

Lin and Hurley Exhibitions
Two of our Painting + Drawing professors — Denzil Hurley and Zhi Lin — each have solo shows at regional museums. Hurley's is May 20 – Nov 5 at Seattle Art Museum, and Lin's is Jun 27 – Feb 4 at Tacoma Art Museum.

Sabin is 2017 MoMA PS1 Young Architect
In February, Jenny Sabin Studio won this annual competition from a pool of fifty firms that was narrowed down to five finalists. Her project, Lumen, is on display at MoMA PS1 beginning in late June.

Solo Shows Abound
We rarely write about First Thursday, but this month we cannot ignore the unusual number of solo shows by our alums. We currently count eight one-person shows in the Pioneer Square area for May.

Chinese Migrants & the Transcontinentals
UW art professor Zhi Lin has spent nearly a decade researching the men’s lives and remembering them through his artwork, on view at the Tacoma Art Museum beginning this summer.

MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Fourteen Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design students are participating in this graduation show at the Henry Art Gallery. The public opening reception is June 2, 7–8:30pm, and the exhibition continues through June 25.

NCECA 2017
March Madness means something different in the clay world because that is when the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts holds its annual conference with attendance in the thousands. This year it is in nearby Portland.

AND_NOW? Archaic Social Media
Arts Wire was the 1989 idea of Anne Focke. She and five interns inventoried early records while also doing an Instagram takeover, exhibit, and podcast series launch in February; a second exhibit in June; and concluding essays in July.

Tihanyi is Axiomatic
Senior Lecturer Timea Tihanyi is part of a collaboration, Axiomatic, with mathematician Jayadev Athreya. She exhibited work from this project during 9e2 and now has a show at Linda Hodges Gallery.

What did you do with your art history degree?
Anne Focke invited fellow Art History alum David Mendoza to join her in a conversation about their lengthy and ongoing careers. It took place on Nov 21 in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.

2017 Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice
This 7-speaker series starts on January 12 and ends on March 9. All lectures are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. Sponsored by The Boeing Company.

Whitney Biennial 2017
Photomedia Assistant Professor Aaron Flint Jamison and alum Matt Browning (BFA 2007) have been selected for the prestigious Whitney Biennial, which takes place in New York City from March 17 to June 11, 2017.

American Painting Today
This exhibition is a wide-ranging selection of paintings by artists in the Greater Seattle area that will be on view at V2 from Nov 28 – Dec 17. Twenty-two of the artists have School connections.

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award
The School is pleased to present the 2017 Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award to Beth Sellars. Curator, artist, museum leader, teacher, and public art manager, she embodies the power of arts leadership.

Kollar American Art Lecture – Wendy Bellion
Hosted by the Division of Art History, this lecture by Wendy Bellion on Nov 17 is titled "Performing Iconoclasm: New York, 1776–1976." It is free and open to the public, but please RSVP to save a seat.

McClelland Curates Exhibition
Ashley Verplank McClelland, a PhD Candidate in the Division of Art History, has curated a show of work by Susan Point. It is at Western Gallery through December 3. She has also organized a series of related events.

Utopia Neighborhood Club
A series of 2016–2017 exhibitions hosted by the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Faculty work, student projects, and art by Jacob Lawrence are featured in separate shows. Several events accompany each exhibition.

Student Work at Meany Hall
Seventeen pieces were selected by School Director Jamie Walker for display during the 2016-2017 academic year. The next time you attend an event at Meany Hall, be sure to see the exhibition.

9e2 in Seattle
9e2 takes place October 21 to 29 at King Street Station and other venues. Installations include work by Senior Lecturer Timea Tihanyi and two other alums. Another alum is involved in one of the performances.

Matched Makers: Northwest Artist Couples
The Museum of Northwest Art hosts this exhibition from October 1, 2016 to January 1, 2017. Associate Professor Mark Zirpel, full-time Lecturer Claire Cowie, several former professors, and a number of alumni are included.

Garvens + Alums in Things That Kill

2016 Seattle Art Fair + Gallery Shows
Seattle Art Fair returns to the CenturyLink Field Event Center for a second year after its success in 2015. It runs August 4–7. As happened last year, there are numerous concurrent shows in local galleries. Alumni and faculty will have work on exhibit.

Out of Sight
This massive exhibition in King Street Station surveys contemporary Pacific Northwest art. It opens at the same time as Seattle Art Fair, but it will run through August. Multiple School-related people are involved or are showing work.

Multiplying Mediums
Summer quarter 2016 is seeing a first-time collaboration between the University of Washington Department of English and the Division of Art in the School of Art + Art History + Design. It is a six-week colloquium...

RRF + Exhibit for Zhi Lin
In January 2016, Painting + Drawing Professor Zhi Lin was awarded a RRF Scholar grant to support his project titled “In Search of Lost History in the 19th Century: Chinese American in Puget Sound.” He spent portions of spring quarter traveling to specific venues of historical riots...

NW Art Now @ TAM
This exhibition is the Tacoma Art Museum’s most recent survey of regional contemporary art. Six of the twenty-four artists included are School alumni. The exhibition will be on view through September 4.
