
2019 SDF Block Party
The Seattle Design Festival Block Party took place on August 24 and 25. Numerous installations in Lake Union Park addressed issues related to BALANCE, this year's festival theme. At least three of these involved School-affiliated people.

James Coupe: Exercises in Passivity

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award Celebration
This spring, 150 friends of the School gathered for the Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award Celebration. Nearly $70,000 was raised in support of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery during the event and will be matched by an anonymous donor.

2019 Seattle Art Fair and Beyond
The School is once again a proud cultural partner of the fair. School-affiliated people are involved with the fair as well as having work shown at Seattle-area exhibitions during the fair.

NEA Grant for Jacob Lawrence Gallery
A $25,000 grant from the Art Works program of the National Endowment for the Arts has been awarded to the Jacob Lawrence Gallery in support of the 2020 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency.

2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium
Several students, representing our Divisions of Art and Art History, are participating in this year's symposium on May 17. There are oral presentations, poster presentations, and the Visual Arts & Design Showcase.

Angélica Maria Millán Lozano + Camilo Godoy: Lugar del Trabajo
This exhibition in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is curated by Juan Franco Ricardo and shares work by two New York-based, Bogotá-born artists. It opens on June 27 and runs through July 20.

Cobblestones and Lumber: UW x SFAI
IVA Assistant Professor Whitney Lynn collaborated with a colleague at San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) to organize a joint exhibition of MFA student work at the SFAI Fort Mason Campus.

Rodriguez at MadArt + More
George Rodriguez (MFA 2009) joined the School's Advisory Board earlier this year and has a project at MadArt Studio in April and May. He has been receiving growing recognition for his artwork.

Zhi LIn Exhibitions
With the 150th anniversary of the golden spike and the creation of the transcontinental railroad taking place in May 2019, Painting + Drawing Professor Lin's research on Chinese railroad workers is being shared in multiple locations.

IxD Students at Cooper Hewitt
Five junior-level students in Interaction Design answered a challenge from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Their design was selected and shown at the museum plus they made a presentation there.

2019 MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Ten Master of Fine Arts and eleven Master of Design students are participating in this graduation exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from May 25 through June 23, 2019.

Kollar American Art Lecture – Elizabeth West Hutchinson
Hosted by the Division of Art History at 6pm on April 18, this lecture is titled "Muybridge on the Beach". It is free and open to the public, but we are asking people to please RSVP.

2019 Graduation Exhibitions
Each year we celebrate graduating Art and Design students with a series of exhibitions in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and Henry Art Gallery. Join us for one or more of these in April, May, and June.

Untethered
This Jacob Lawrence Gallery exhibition showcases recent augmented reality and virtual reality student projects. A reception and lecture take place on March 12. The exhibition is open March 11 through 18.

Strange Coupling
A student-run Division of Art tradition, Strange Coupling brings together UW students and Seattle-area artists to create collaboratively. There are auctions at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery on March 7 and a concluding exhibition on June 8 + 9.

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award Recipient

This lecture series begins on January 10 and ends on March 14, 2019. All lectures are hosted at the Henry Art Gallery. They are free and open to the public.

MDes Thesis Process Show
This event on December 13 allows eleven Master of Design students to share their in-progress thesis projects. Attendees are encouraged to give feedback to students in an informal setting.

Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award
Named for an alum, this award recognizes individuals who have worked to enliven and strengthen our world through visionary and active leadership. The 2019 honoree will be announced in March, and there will be a celebratory dinner in April.

BAM Biennial 2018: Glasstastic
Associate Professor Mark Zirpel plus alums Anna Mlasowsky and Katie Miller have work in this glass-themed exhibition at Bellevue Arts Museum, which runs from November 9, 2018, through April 14, 2019.

Drapkin + Tropical Lab 12
Abigail Drapkin, a second year MFA student, attended Tropical Lab 12 in Singapore this summer. She has an exhibition of work created during and inspired by that experience with a reception on October 22.

Student Work at Meany Center

Sonny Assu: Études for the Settler
The Jacob Lawrence Gallery presents this exhibition of work by First Nations artist Sonny Assu. It opens on Tuesday, October 23, and runs through Saturday, November 17.

Fundraiser for Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency
The Jacob Lawrence Gallery has a fundraising campaign to support the 2019 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency. This residency and its accompanying exhibition were established in 2015 and are a cornerstone of the Gallery's program.

Simpson Center Support
Each year, the UW Simpson Center for the Humanities provides support to a variety of projects. Three people from the School are involved with programs funded for the 2018–2019 academic year.

Printmaking Association + Sale
The Printmaking Association, a registered student organization at UW, will host a print sale on Nov 14 + 15. Co-founder Anne Bryson Doyle provides background about herself and the group.

Jugalbandi [Duet]: Power and Pleasure in Indian Painting
This symposium on November 17 focuses on Indian painting in Mewar and Marwar, distinct areas of Rajasthan ruled by Rajputs (Hindu kings), and the Mughal empire between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The Road to Burning Man
Alum Nora Atkinson earned a 2002 BFA in Photography with an Art History minor. She is now Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC, and curated No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man.
