The Jacob Lawrence Gallery presents work by second year MFA students: Granite Calimpong, Lucy Copper, Abigail Drapkin, Jackie Granger, Baorong Liang, Sean Lockwood, Brighton McCormick, Charles Stobbs, emily charlotte taibleson, and Connor Walden.

4Culture Project Grants
The King County cultural funding agency announced over $1 million in project grants in mid-June. A faculty member (Tihanyi), current graduate student (Franco), and several alums are among the recipients.

Artists and Writers, by the Book
Interdisciplinary Visual Arts Lecturer Claire Cowie and English Professor Maya Sonenberg brought together two classes to build artist books during spring quarter 2018.

Graduation + Teaching Awards

Faculty Friday: Doug Jeck
Doug Jeck, College of Arts & Sciences Associate Professor of the Arts, teaches students to think on their feet — by asking them to painstakingly create life-size human forms.

OMA&D 50th Anniversary Exhibition
Associate Professor Kristine Matthews, her Studio Matthews, and students in DESIGN 467 have been involved in developing an exhibition to celebrate OMA&D's history. It is on view May 1 – June 13 in Allen Library North.

MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Nine Master of Fine Arts and four Master of Design students are participating in this graduation exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery. The public reception is June 1, 7–9pm, and the exhibition runs from May 26 through June 24.

2018 Graduation Exhibitions
Each year we celebrate graduating Art and Design undergraduate and graduate students with a series of exhibitions in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and Henry Art Gallery. Join us for one or more of these in April, May, and June.

Strange Coupling
A student-run Division of Art tradition, Strange Coupling brings together UW students and Seattle-area artists to create collaboratively. There are March events at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery and a concluding exhibition later in the spring.

Mission to the Moon: 2030
Collaborations and connecting coursework to professional practice is a significant aim of the Industrial Design Program. The DESIGN 445 course during autumn quarter 2017 is an example of just how powerful these collaborations can be.

MONDAY – Volume 1
MONDAY is a limited-edition journal produced by the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Each issue is thematically driven, highlighting artists’ writings alongside other diverse perspectives on a particular topic. Volume 1 focuses on materiality and transformation.

Graduation Celebration 2018
This event for graduating students takes place on Saturday, June 9, before the University's commencement ceremony. Tickets are required for attending students and guests.

MDes Thesis Poster Session
This event on Jan 4 allows Master of Design students to share their in-progress theses projects. Attendees are encouraged to give feedback to students in an informal setting.

Hues at Cascadia
Two print exhibitions are on view at Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds, Washington, through Jan 7. Among the artists in these exhibitions are several with School ties.

Wilson + Tropical Lab 11
Caitlyn Wilson, a second year MFA student, attended Tropical Lab 11 in Singapore this summer. She has an exhibition of work inspired by that experience with a reception on Nov 13.

Design Pecha Kucha
An annual event in which Design students give Pecha Kucha style presentations about their experiences over the summer. This year, it took place on Nov 2 with an overflow audience.

Graduate Recruitment Awards
New graduate students started classes and were welcomed to the School in an evening event on September 27. We attract outstanding students with competitive financial packages built from a number of sources.

Student Work at Meany Center
Thirteen students have work on display in the lower lobby of Meany Center on campus through May 2018. Be sure to view the exhibition the next time you attend a performance.

Material Performance: Second Year MFA
An exhibition at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery featuring recent work by artists beginning their second year in the MFA program. Opens September 27 at 6pm and runs through November 4.

IxD Delves into Mixed Reality
This past year, students in the Interaction Design (IxD) Program have explored the new possibilities of holographic interactions with a number of projects using the Microsoft HoloLens.

HUB Director's Art Prize
A painting titled Juan Jose by Arely Morales was chosen for the 2017 prize. The location in the HUB is being selected, so look for it during autumn quarter.

Out of Sight
It is the third year for this survey exhibition of contemporary Northwest art, which opens at the same time as Seattle Art Fair in early August and then runs every weekend through the end of the month.

Simpson Center Support
The UW Simpson Center for the Humanities recently announced its Spring 2017 Awards to support work during the 2017-2018 academic year. Three people from the School are involved in these projects.

Art History: 2 PhDs + 3 MAs
Five graduate students from the Division of Art History completed their degrees during the 2016-2017 academic year: Beetem, Budnick, Giffin, May, and Mayer.

Graduate Medalist in the Arts
Erin Giffin, who completed her PhD this month, was chosen by the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences as the Graduate Medalist in the Arts. The medalists are selected from faculty nominations.

Graduation + Teaching Awards
Ten students were recognized with awards at our Graduation Celebration on June 10. One of the students, Erin Giffin, also was the recipient of the Arts & Sciences 2017 Dean's Graduate Medal in the Arts.

AFALA Evening Amazes
What a night! The School hosted its first Anne Focke Arts Leadership Award event on April 29. We honored 2017 award winner Beth Sellars, heard from alum Jenny Sabin, and raised over $62,000 for graduate student support.

Students Attend DESIGN: HYBRID
Nineteen Industrial Design juniors and seniors traveled to Portland in late April to participate in the IDSA West District Design Conference. They were accompanied by Assistant Professor Jason Germany who is also the IDSA UW student chapter advisor.

MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Fourteen Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design students are participating in this graduation show at the Henry Art Gallery. The public opening reception is June 2, 7–8:30pm, and the exhibition continues through June 25.

Design Career Fair: A Bridge to Work
In 2014, the Division of Design began hosting the Design Career Fair in response to growing demand from employers who increasingly wanted to invest in designers and design thinking to drive innovation in their organizations.

Strange Coupling 2017
A student-run Division of Art tradition for over a decade, Strange Coupling bridges the gap between the UW and the greater Seattle art community by pairing students with professional artists for a collaborative project.

NCECA 2017
March Madness means something different in the clay world because that is when the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts holds its annual conference with attendance in the thousands. This year it is in nearby Portland.

AND_NOW? Archaic Social Media
Arts Wire was the 1989 idea of Anne Focke. She and five interns inventoried early records while also doing an Instagram takeover, exhibit, and podcast series launch in February; a second exhibit in June; and concluding essays in July.

Two Passions, One Vision
When Allan and Mary Kollar met as teachers at Bothell High School in the 1970s, Allan taught art and Mary taught English. They knew little about each other’s fields, but over time they discovered intriguing connections between the two disciplines.

Challenge Grant From Anonymous Donor
A generous friend of the School has just pledged to match all donations up to $100,000 to support recruitment of excellent graduate students in Art, Art History, and Design, but only until December 27.
