Division of Design faculty member Kristine Matthews has received an SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Designers) Global Design Merit Award for her work on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center. Matthews received the award on 08 June 2013 at the SEGD annual conference in San Francisco along with Alan Maskin of Olson Kundig Architects, who collaborated on the three year development of the 11,000 square-foot Visitor Center. Congratulations to the second-year graduate students in the Division of Design whose project was announced as the winner of this year’s Design Ignites Change IDEA Award on 08 February 2013. Known as Pivot, the project was created as a way to discretely empower victims of human trafficking. The design team included Mike Fretto, Kari Gaynor, Josh Nelson, Adriel Rollins, and Melanie Wang; they worked under the guidance of Assistant Professor Tad Hirsch.

Twenty-four staff in a variety of full- and part-time positions are the people who keep the School of Art (SoA) running. Only one of those jobs—Administrative Services Coordinator—is currently vacant, but a new person will be hired shortly. Years of service in the SoA vary widely. Some staff have been here over two decades (Judith Clark has been here the longest), while others started work in the last year (Starla Patenaude is our most recent addition).

Students are often so busy with school work and supporting themselves that they do not have time for other activities. Two current undergraduate students, one each from the Design and Art Divisions, have shown that taking the time to use their creative skills as a way to help others can be a rewarding and very worthwhile learning experience.
