Each summer Microsoft Research hosts a Faculty Summit at its headquarters, and part of the event is a Design Expo featuring work by interaction design students. Participation is by invitation only, and Microsoft Research selects faculty and students from institutions around the world that represent the state of the art in interaction design. During July and August 2013, we sent a survey to the more than 6,000 people on our mailing lists. We received over 1,100 responses, which is quite good for an electronic survey. Thank you to everyone who took part! While we have already learned a lot from the survey results, there is still more we can discover as staff time allows for digging deeper into the responses. The SoA participates in several social media outlets: Facebook, Twitter, and Vimeo. Accounts are not required to view what we post, but, if you do use social media, be sure to include us. There are three primary SoA social media outlets. We post similar material to the Facebook and Twitter feeds, which is a mix of event information; news from current faculty, staff, students, and alumni; and the occasional tidbit from the local or national arts scene. Twice a year the University of Washington gives Royalty Research Fund (RRF) awards to faculty who have applied for project support. This program has existed since 1992, and an RRF Scholar option was added in 1994. RRF Scholars receive release time from teaching for one academic quarter in order to focus on their project. The School’s Instructional Technicians are always on the lookout for ways to improve the facilities they oversee in order to ensure the health and safety of our students.
