ART 101 B: Visual Art and Creative Thinking

Overview
This course will explore how we observe and interpret our visual world. We will examine a variety of working methods to translate concepts into creative solutions. Students will be introduced to art and design terminology, techniques, and analysis. Class sessions include drawing, sculpture, writing, and critical thinking exercises as well as lectures by visiting arts professionals and group activities. Some projects are collaborative. This is a great orientation to the opportunities available for students considering a major or minor in Art, Art History or Design.

Supplies
There is a prepared kit at Artist and Craftsman available to you for a substantial discount. It is approximately $30. Bring your Husky card to show you're enrolled as a UW student and look for or ask about “UW ART 101: Cowie”.  
*You will need to make a few print-outs or photocopies throughout the quarter. The easiest way to do this is to have some extra $ on your Husky card and print in the School of Art Computer Center (SoACC) in basement of the Art Building.
OPTIONAL: Many assignments will allow you to use any other materials of your choice. You might consider watercolor, markers, inks, camera, specialty papers, art papers, X-acto knife, scissors, ruler, tape, glues, etc., especially if you already own those things or plan on majoring in art.

MUSEUM ACCESS
You can get a sticker in the art office to put on your UW ID and it will allow you free admission to the Seattle Art Museum.
The Henry Art Gallery is always free to UW students.
The Frye Art Museum is always free to everyone.

Grading Policy
Receiving full credit is based upon excellent participation, responsibility in all aspects of the course, and successful completion of all course assignments throughout the quarter.
Sketchbooks will be collected (and returned) for grading at the end of the quarter.
Assignment details will be given verbally, in hardcopy, and posted to Canvas as they are assigned and individual assignments will range in value from 3% - 15% of your final grade. Grades will be posted to Canvas in the form of points equal to those percentages. Projects will be added to Canvas as the quarter progresses, and will include due dates, submission expectations, and grade percentages.
