Syllabus Description:

This course is restricted to undergraduate and graduate students in the UW Division of Design. DESIGN 371 is an advanced visual design and interaction design course covering interface design. The course is for design majors who have intermediate knowledge in visual communication design (typography, color, composition, etc.), intermediate knowledge in interaction design (information architecture, behavior of products, animation, etc.) and pre-existing skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign).

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Course Objectives:

The purpose of this class is to help students develop the skills necessary to design an effective user interface (UI): the space and controls through which a user communicates with a tool/application/device. Specifically, students will:

  • Research, plan and design concepts and prototypes for two different mobile applications
  • Discuss, analyze and evaluate what makes a UI effective or ineffective, including:
    • logical information architecture / user task flows
    • feedback and microinteractions that guide user behavior
  • Conduct user testing and incorporate test results into a design prototype

Specifically, students will work alone and in small groups to create two full prototypes for two assigned product/services that serve a specific audience/subject area.

Catalog Description:
Introduces students to the fundamental building blocks of interface design including mental models, dynamic information displays, affordances, feedback, user flows, control systems, and interactive narratives. Students use these principles to design visual interfaces and prototypes that are both inventive and functional.
