Syllabus Description:

ARTH 309, The Portrait in Modern Art

This course will introduce and explore the legacy of Western European and American portraiture from the 19th through the 21st centuries through lectures, discussions, readings, and assignments.  Student will learn of the relevance of the portrait to individuals and society. Students will also learn to analyze and understand portrait archetypes and icons with respect to social class, gender issues, and other major descriptors to uncover the changing historical and social components revealed.
