A recently released film, The Monuments Men, is raising awareness about a World War II program that aimed to preserve cultural treasures during the war as well as track down and return artworks stolen by the Nazis. Twice a year the University of Washington gives Royalty Research Fund (RRF) awards to faculty who have applied for project support. This program has existed since 1992, and an RRF Scholar option was added in 1994. RRF Scholars receive release time from teaching for one academic quarter in order to focus on their project. Four faculty members have or will soon make career transitions. For non-faculty, the term might be retirement, but for most faculty it means leaving teaching to focus on other professional activities. Patricia Failing (Art History) officially stepped down from her teaching position in December 2012, although she is continuing to serve on thesis and dissertation committees.
