Syllabus Description:

ARTH 484, 19th & 20th century American Realism

This course will explore Realistic art produced in the United States (or by American artists living abroad) in the 19th & 20th centuries. Through lectures, discussions, readings, exams, and assignments, students will learn to analyze and understand how industrialization, the development of transportation and communications, the spread of corporate organization in business, urbanization, technological development, the rise of mass media and mass markets affects and is reflected in the Realistic artists from this period with respect to social class, identity, sexuality, race class, and other major descriptors to uncover the changing historical and social components revealed.
