Each spring, The Stranger selects a short list of finalists in five categories for their arts Genius Awards. 2013 is the tenth anniversary of these awards, and the School of Art had three alumni among the finalists in two categories: Sherry Markovitz (MFA 1975) and Rodrigo Valenzuela (MFA 2012) in Visual Art and Juniper Shuey (BFA 2001), with his partner Zoe Scofield, in Performance. During Autumn Quarter 2013, the School of Art has several faculty being considered for tenure and promotion. A series of lectures and exhibits has been organized to highlight their work. Michael Cepress, alumnus (MFA 2006) and sometime School of Art instructor, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year. In twenty-one days he raised $52,210 to complete, launch, and produce his first full men’s and women’s clothing collections. The 2013 finalists for this year’s Neddy Award were recently announced on the Neddy at Cornish webpage. This year the two categories of awards are painting and open medium (any medium or combination of media grounded in the visual arts).
