Michael Cepress' work for Seattle Symphony
The Seattle Symphony performed Become Ocean by Pulitzer Prize winner John Luther Adams at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 6, 2014. For this special occasion, the symphony commissioned accessories from Division of Art alumnus Michael Cepress (MFA 2006). Two Division of Art alumnae — Joan Hornig (MFA 1985) and Amy Johnson (MFA 2007) — were selected in May 2014 for Alaskan artist awards from this Anchorage-based foundation. Hornig, who has lived just outside Fairbanks since 1999, is a painter who has started doing ceramic work. She received a $7,500 project award to purchase a kiln and clay supply, which will allow her to create sculptures at her home studio. In May 2014, Artist Trust announced some of their major annual awards. The Yvonne Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement was given to Claudia Fitch (BFA 1975). As their press release states, this $10,000 award “recognizes creative excellence, professional accomplishment, and dedication to the visual arts.” Among the artists who won fellowships for this year is Cathy McClure (MFA 1997).
