Syllabus Description:

This course is restricted to undergraduate and graduate students in the UW Division of Design, School of Art + Art History + Design and selected students in the UW MHCI+D program.

If you are not a UW Design student or an MHCI+D student and you wish to request a seat in the class, please email me at kcheng@uw.edu. In your email, please include a link to your online design portfolio, or attach a PDF (10MB maximum) of your design work. Please also explain your prior experience/qualifications in visual design.

DESIGN 495B is a new evening seminar from the UW Division of Design. Each week, either a designer or product design firm will visit and give a lecture. The majority of the invited firms will also be seeking to recruit hires for their company. When firms are seeking to recruit hires, students will have the opportunity to sign up for Friday interview slots following the Thursday lectures. These interviews will be organized by the firms (they will select the students who they want to interview, based on a review of submitted websites/portfolios). Students are welcome to suggest speakers and firms that they would like to have present to the class (just email me at kcheng@uw.edu).

This is a credit/no-credit class, for a maximum of two credits.
Besides attending the lectures, students will be required to submit questions for the designers/firms to answer prior to their visit (to shape the content of the talks).
Students will also be required to write short reflections after each visit (describing how the lecture influenced their thinking about their own professional development).

Essentially, this series of evening presentations/discussions seeks to address issues that UW Design students have expressed to faculty in the past, such as:
How can I learn what people are looking for in a hire?
How can I get connected to people in the design industry— and “sow the seeds" of a future relationship?
How can I learn more about places I can work after graduation?
